"New academic research on whether to repower or extend the lifetime of an obsolescent wind farm in Europe reveals that without new subsidies for repowered sites, low cost lifetime extensions focused on maximising return before decommissioning are more probable, with a potential to affect about half the wind turbine fleet in Germany, Spain and Denmark. In the absence of new subsidies, we could be looking at the beginning of the end for the wind industry in Europe."www.thegwpf.com/wind-farm-lifetime-extensions-and-repowering-managing-the-death-spiral/

This of course is the 'nightmare scenario' a strong winter storm crosses UK dropping a few feet of snow (it has happened in the past). Then a blocking anticyclone settles over the UK as is happening now and the clear nights lead to a hard freeze. The snow covers the solar cells but the ones in the open 'farms' are not reachable by vehicle and the ones on roofs are too dangerous to clear of snow. The STOR fields of generators run happily for a few hours then run out of fuel and the roads to them are not easily passable for convoys of trucks and the generators are in any case in 4 - 5 ft of snow. After 12 - 24 hours rolling blackouts start major power supply from Drax stop as it cannot get enough wood chips. Don't even start talking about electric cars. The winter of 1963 (which some of us remember) snow fell just after Christmas and was deep even in towns. Entire trains were marooned in snow drifts in various parts of the country. In the 'warmer' South East UK the snow didn't melt until March. The one bright spot is that there are at last Fusion generators that may just come online: www.world-nuclear-news.org/NN-Tokamak-Energy-turns-on-ST40-fusion-reactor-28041701.html www.nowscience.co.uk/single-post/2017/07/09/Lockheed-Martin-Release-New-Details-About-Compact-Fusion-ReactorAs long as the idiot 'greens' do not try to stop it as it is 'nuclear' fusion. I am sure that they will try. As they belong to the Ehrlic tendency: ""Giving society cheap and abundant energy would be the equivalent of giving an idiot child a machine gun," said Paul Ehrlich. "It'd be little short of disastrous for us to discover a source of cheap, clean and abundant energy because of what we would do with it [emphasis original]," said Amory Lovins in 1977."

Why ever would a progressive state do this considering that housing costs are already causing homelessness on an epic scale? "California Becomes First State to Order Solar on New Homes
On Wednesday, the Golden State became the first in the U.S. to require solar panels on almost all new homes. Most new units built after Jan. 1, 2020, will be required to include solar systems as part of the standards adopted by the California Energy Commission. While that’s a boost for the solar industry, critics warned that it will also drive up the cost of buying a house by almost $10,000. Solar shares surged on the decision. Homebuilders fell."www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-09/california-votes-to-require-rooftop-solar-power-on-new-homesSurely it couldn't be connected to this? "Tesla's Constant Turmoil Can't Hide The Fact That SolarCity Is Dying
As Tesla’s struggles to perform the most basic assembly tasks at its Fremont car plant grab the headlines, the SolarCity news is signaling to the market a reality of which I have been convinced for some time: SolarCity is worthless. "www.forbes.com/sites/jimcollins/2018/06/22/teslas-constant-turmoil-cant-hide-the-fact-that-solarcity-is-dying/#470ae77048ecWUWT thinks it may be.... "How different things would have been had Hillary Clinton won. Hillary Clinton pledged to install five hundred million solar panels during her presidency. Solar City would likely have been front of the queue to supply those solar panels, and Elon Musk would likely have pocketed billions of dollars of taxpayers cash helping Clinton fulfil her solar pledge."wattsupwiththat.com/2018/06/22/forbes-tesla-green-car-production-circus-distracting-from-solar-city-woes/

"Britain is experiencing a “wind drought” that has slowed or halted the blades on turbines around the country. July’s wind energy output so far is down 40 per cent when compared to the same period last year – despite more wind turbines having been installed in the interim, according to new figures. “We’ve been typically doing between 2 to 3 gigawatts of wind [generation],” says Rob Gross of Imperial College London, which complied the data, “At a windier time of the year we might be doing 9 or 10.”" www.newscientist.com/article/2174262-weird-wind-drought-means-britains-turbines-are-at-a-standstill/Lucky it is not winter when consumption is at its peak in UK.

Another couple of years and they will not need to use imagination. They will be able to sit there in the dark knowing what it is like without coal. Welcome to the green dystopia
