I haven't seen anything about cooling effects, so I'm guessing that the plume hasn't gone particularly high into the atmosphere.

I haven't seen anything about cooling effects, so I'm guessing that the plume hasn't gone particularly high into the atmosphere. Press news releases say it climbed up to 11km first days and it is currently reaching 5-7km (round 550Hpa and up). Guess it´s too soon to determine any cooling effect either global or affecting only Northern Hemisphere or part of it. Guess this possible cooling effect depends mainly on how long and strong will this volcanic episode be and last and wouldn´t be really detectable after a few months... Who knows, we may be bound to 2010 being known in the future as the ´year without summer´ again... My questions and concerns ares: What if this last for weeks or even months? What if this volcanic episode gets even stronger and Katlay displays its nice and overdued big eruption? Economic impact might be enourmous worldwide if this scenario does not comes to its end soon... Worried as well about how could this affect islanders if weather conditions there change and the main volcanic ashes cloud plunges into -for example- Reykjavik Area where two thirds of total Iceland population lives, that counts for around 200.000 people... Heard an Islandic joke this days going something like ´Iceland is sending back to the British the ashes of their Finantial System´ ;D (remember that due to Iceland´s bankruptcy declaration many British Funds and clients were affected and they are currently demanding and negotiating with the Icelandic Government the return of the funds and the Debt) My best wishes to Iceland and its great people

Radar of Flights over Europe-Great Britain very quiet , Norways' moving again ( at time of posting ): www.flightradar24.com/Grounding that many aircraft is costing a million dollars an hour. Tomorrow ( Monday ) , they hope to have 50% of the flights moving. Jet stream forecast: www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/jetstream.aspHopefully a predicted mid-Atlantic high -wednesday ,pm, will move the ash north. It'll probably touch Gander , Newfoundland , there'll probably be a Notice to Air Men -Canadian East coast .

I think the joke is - The Brits asked for cash not ash ! This way sounds much better: short and brilliant (mine was sort of a translation from an spanish news reporter on TV)

Germany and Belgium have just confirmed their airspace shall remain closed til at last 8pm today, all Transport Ministers of the European Union holding a telecom conference this morning to evaluate the situation. Thanks for the links! I would say that it seems Central and Southern Europe -Spain included- will remain affected until at last next friday according to jet-stream prediction... next week-end it looks like the ash clould will then move more north-eastwards affecting mainly Scandinavia and Polar Circle nearby areas. By the way, complete technical information regarding each volcanic episode is updated via ASHTAM, while NOTAM would rather reflect Airway Tracks Closure or define prohibited fying areas or Airports closures etc related to either volcanic activity or any other cause. There have never been such a large impact on Civil Aviation due to either a natural or non natural reason, terrorist attack on September 11th included. Would like to have some expert´s opinion on how much ashes, how high up they must get, how long should it keep on going etc in order to consider a temporal effect on Earth´s mean temperature for the next months or year.

An article posted yesterday in a spanish newspaper reported the large difference between current eruption and Pinatubo´s regarding both height of of ash-clouds and tons of material being thrown out into upper atmosphere; it concludes that Iceland´s volcano is still far from affecting Earth´s Global Mean Temperature the way Pinatubo in the Phillippines did a few years ago. Something I haven´t heard before was that a collateral damage of Sulfurs reaching upper atmosphere was its interaction with CFCs multiplying CFCs molecules effect on destroying the Ozone layer, it reported.

From: eureferendum.blogspot.com/"This is getting to be a nightmare without end. Several airlines are on the brink of collapse, and stranded passengers are getting increasingly desperate. And, with impeccable Gallic timing, French railway workers have gone on strike. Plans to feed them into a volcano crater, as human sacrifices, have so far been vetoed by the French government."

Anyone know how an active volcano affects satellite temp readings? Is the hot spot pretty much localized, or does the heat (including that carried by the plume) bleed over covering a larger area? How sensitive are the sensors to burn-in, and how fast are their response times after experiencing a high peak?
