These are not normal clouds for the 14th of August at all. They look more like late Sept clouds. Attachments:

Flying from San Francisco to Denver today:
Flying over the Sierras, I had a vantage point to see the Sierras from about 100 mile south of Lake Tahoe, up across the lake and a ways to the north. In short, I could not see any snow at all. I was a little surprised at that since to my memory last year still had snow on the eastern slopes of the Sierras, and my perception of the western US this year is that we had a lot of precipitation and cool temperature. IIRC, there was snow on the Sierras this time last year, but not the year before.
It was overcast over the Rockies on the approach into Denver, so I really couldn't do any snow-watching there. I could not see any snow on the mountains from Denver. I plan to get up to Mt Evans to hike sometime this week, so maybe I can get a vantage point to find some snow then.

Flying back to San Francisco, I saw snow both on the Rockies and on the Sierras, and I discovered why I didn't see snow on the trip out while flying over the Sierras - it's kinda silly really. I've flown long enough I should have thought of this ...
When flying out, I was sitting on the side of the plane looking northward, which means I only saw the south and western slopes of the Sierras. Flying back, I was looking south meaning I saw the northern and eastern slope. There is still snow on those slopes - about what I would have expected to see there. The amount was about what I expected to see in August.

Finally have gotten more than 3 days in a row of summer like temperatures here. We are now up to at least 5 days of summer. Nights are still cold as the water is still below normal but we are having sunny and warm and calm mornings. Its above 70 in the morning so gotten past those 60's and its now 75 at noon and the breeze just getting started.
Its like early July instead of late August but with 5 weeks to go for summer all I have to worry about is the SSTs southwest of here turning colder over the past few days and what that might portend.
But maybe we are going to actually get some summer weather there is nothing better than a sunny summer morning on the beach. Rivaled only closely by a typical sunny calm fall or early winter afternoon on the beach.
Summer afternoons kind of suck because the wind comes up or it gets hot if it doesn't. October to January you don't get much wind in the afternoon.
So enjoying if for now!!

While the local temperatures will probably seem unremarkable - and would have been downright pleasant during my fall and winter at International Falls, today's 68/88 temps have the locals saying "fall is in the air."
And even this transplant can feel the difference.
