Well, I'm tired of waiting up. Off to bed then. Have to get up tomorrow and go to work. One of my VORTAC sites got knocked out by a tornado Friday near Marysville, Indiana, and I've got more rubble to pick through today looking for test equipment. BTW, this was the site that last year showed a 5 degree difference in headings vs. GPS during another geo-storm. Now all the monitor antennas that guaranteed I was within 1 degree of azimuth accuracy are laying out in a soybean field. Nite all.
Some people have a NEED to believe man is causing global warming because they can't accept the fact that climate change may be OUT OF OUR HANDS!

Looks like the onset has a positive Bz, so nothing too impressive so far...

Well, this morning had the best aurora I have seen since November of 2003. (Which was probably a once in a lifetime event.) The auroras were green and greenish-blue with lots of pulsing and swirling going on... The was one bright green band that swept accross the sky moving at a pretty good clip, and there were lots of swirling whirlpools in its wake. Awesome!
Dr. I ... a question: I'm a frequent viewer and sometimes poster. My major concern is solar effects on NAVAID facilities, mostly my own (I'm an FAA tech). If one wanted to prove to someone the effects that solar has on GPS navigation, where would one go? Have you got some insight into that?
Sometime ago, one of my sites was NOTAM'ed off-the-air for three days because Air Traffic was receiving reports of headings based on GPS varying as much as 5 degrees from headings based on my ABB VOR site. ABB got destroyed in the tornadoes last week, but I also saw the same effect at BQM VOR. Our Flight Check bird took the site off the air because they noted that the radials were "rotated" three degrees. That was during an event when the K-Index was seven.
My concern is that people are believing GPS above ground-based systems. Do you know of anyone doing any research into these sorts of phenomena?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, total nonsense. But the imagery is real and rather vividly formed in such a way to evoke these "hallucinations".
What's really going on here?
My guess is that these weird effects are nothing out of the ordinary, but just filtered by the relatively narrow optical bandwidth of each wavelength-specific imager. Each wavelength tends to be temperature dependent such that features a certain temperature are rendered more clearly than other features in the same image which are further from this preferred temperature.
So complex objects which have components at different temperatures may appear to be oddly formed because the 'off temperature' features may be invisible or poorly rendered at that same wavelength.
Or is there a better explanation of this "death star" phantasma?
Thank you Dr. I for the docs. I'm going to look more into research at the IJCSNJ and HAARP. Amazing what you can find on the internet, like the Venkateswara paper. As a field technician, I don't often get access to the "latest and greatest" information, and I'm certainly not an engineer or researcher. It appears that the FAA admits there is SOME effect, but little has filtered down to my level. Still it's disconcerting when one of my NAVAID sites gets shut down because the people above me trust GPS more than a ground-based fixed beacon. "Surely it can't be GPS" sounds less and less certain to me. Ha.
Anyhow, thanks for your help. I'm off to find all I can.
Still reading and hanging around the board ...
