Well it already feels like Autumn here in the UK and my tomatoes are growing very slowly If it carries on like this I might change it to Autumn watch sooner. If Katla goes off big time we might need to change it to Winter watch Also the Baring Sea and North Atlantic are much colder than normal so Europe might get a colder Autumn than last year as sea temperature is very important in keeping us warm. I haven't been posting much lately as I have been busy studying for exams

Most of Coastal California is still in winter/spring mode. Except for a couple of brief heatwaves, its still not summer here.

I just moved up to the Seattle area from coastal California about 5 weeks ago. In another thread, I mentioned that it was cooler, but the records I saw didn't seem to be too much cooler than normal here, and while I heard some people talking about how Seattle had a 120 year high for rainfall this year, it didn't look to me to be too far out of norm. Well, on temps, it looks like a blogger at one of the local TV stations is taking a little different angle on it than I was looking at it: www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/scott/125742443.htmlExcerpt: Interesting read, and maybe a little more than just my perception. (And yes, Coastal California seemed cooler and wetter than normal in the early part of this year. It seemed like it rained on the peninsula in the Bay Area as much as Seattle).

Yesterday I spotted the first ripe blackberry this year another early one, however due to the colder than average July fruit production has slowed down (my tomatoes are way behind where they should be). This morning feels like a September morning (without the spiders web), with the winds from the North. So sad about the poor people killed and injured in Norway

My daily report from Poland is that it is very cool and blustery.
And yes, Byz, the tragic Oslo bombing and the mass murder is a tragedy. The lone police officer was the first killed, and after that the children were murdered, not like penned sheep, but like penned children. And all to make political points.

I was surprised to see holly berries, sycamore seeds in bunches brown and waiting to fall, pine cones open and dropped and rowan trees loaded with berries.

Thanks God for the 2 Amendment.

Thanks God for the 2 Amendment. Err... Gun ownership in Norway is far more relaxed than here in the UK. The man who did this had a semi-automatic weapon legally obtained, here in the UK we have banned them for years and it is very hard for people to get hold of them. You'll now find that all gun crime incidents here in the UK, do not involve semi-automatic weapons. Most attacks here are now virtually all knife crime, not gun crime. If the police are called and you have a gun they will usually kill you first and ask questions later, this acts as a rather good deterent to carrying a gun. If you are found in possession of a gun in the UK in a public place the minimum jail term is five years Most of the guns that are on the streets are replicas that have been modified (you'll even go to jail for carrying one of those around and the police will still kill you if they think it's a real one). I like our gun laws and since they were introduced there are less guns around and if someone has a knife they have to get up close to injure you. I've never heard of a drive by stabbing ;D

Thanks God for the 2 Amendment. Wrong. Very few criminals can manufacture guns and ammo. It takes a legal industry to supply firearms. So, if guns are illegal, criminals won't have guns.

Place with some of the highest violence including murder, DC where they have extreme gun control. In Australia violent crime went up 300% when they took the guns away.

Place with some of the highest violence including murder, DC where they have extreme gun control. In Australia violent crime went up 300% when they took the guns away. But not here in the UK but we have strong boarder controls whereas Australia has such a huge coastline that it is almost impossible to stop arms smuggling. Gun crime follows criminality and drugs, the same correlation follows knife crime as well. I bet Montana also has a low crime rate, what tends to cause crime is the society that it exists in. An example of this is communist states have high levels of corruption, but very low levels of day to day crime as they are police states (I know this as half my family lived in Latvia under the soviet union) so the best way to keep guns and reduce a nations level of gun crime is... setup a communist police state Since Latvia has become a free country day to day crime has gone through the roof, however at least people are free. An example of how useless guns can be is last year when Gabrielle Giffords was shot she had a gun and so did to other people at the scene but it was the unarmed person who stopped the incident getting worse. In the last year here in the UK we two big shooting incidents one was a drive by in cumbria, luckily in both cases they only had rifles or hand guns not semi-automatic weapons (thank goodness) so even though the outcome was bad it could have been far worse if semi-automatics had been involved. What made the incidents above worse was that in the most serious incident the guns were legally held by the person who used them, he was not a criminal he was on a vendetta (and innocent people were killed as he shot them from his car) had he only had a knife the body count would have been much lower as the defendant would have had a chance. Also there is no point using percentages from one year to the next as they can be very misleading it is better to use a five to ten year figure with the actual number, so it would be useful to know what gun crime in Australia was for five years running up to the ban and five years after (I had statistics drummed into me at university and how misleading they can be). Here in the UK we also had a rise in violent crime last year by a large percentage (overall crime fell) however the previous year had been the lowest figure since the early 1990's, so even though there was a big jump it was extremely misleading against the long term trend. One of the saddest things with guns in the home is when young children find them, play with them as toys and end up killing their siblings or friends, this just destroys their lives and they never get over it
