Winter/Spring Outlook 2011-2012
Forecast By Theodore White, astrometeorologist.S
published: October 13, 2011
In the northern hemisphere, we are headed into an early winter season just on the horizon by mid-October, according to my calculations.
My long-range outlook calls for earlier than normal snowfalls at higher elevations and colder than normal temperatures for two-thirds of North America. This, as southern California experiences warmer-than-normal temperatures.
However, with winter coming early, I also expect it to end early as well, giving way to an earlier-than-normal and warmer than average spring season followed by an early summer with Indian summer conditions into next autumn.
My astrometeorological outlook calls for climate conditions to run a month-and-one-half ahead of time, so -
Mid-October to late October 2011 will feel like late November and even December in some regions from Canada to the northeastern U.S. It will get quite nippy out there with colder than normal temperatures.
November will feel like December
December's temperatures are like mid-January
January feels like February
and mid-February 2011 begins to feel more like March
Winter ends in mid-February in my outlook. Spring 2012 arrives early.
The change to winter-like temperatures takes place soon in the U.S. and Canada, several days after Friday, October 14, 2011 as transiting Saturn emerges from the far side of the Sun.
These helio-conjunctions in centuries past have shown colder and wet conditions predominate when in particular positions relative to the Earth. Going into mid-to-late October we will see the NAO turn negative.
The main change will be in temperature with cold, sometimes biting arctic air arriving earlier than normal. I expect to hear of decent snowfalls at northern latitudes in North America this month of October and into early November 2011.
This winter sees less precipitation than the previous two winters of 2010 and 2011; however, it will be colder than usual with winter temperatures arriving earlier than expected.
We will see unseasonable colder temperatures by mid-to-late October - especially at northern latitudes from Canada to say, the middle of the United States.
Again, winter arrives earlier than normal (before meteorological winter of December 1st) and long before the onset of astronomical winter by Dec. 21st and the winter solstice.
Spring arrives earlier than normal with signs showing that winter wanes by mid-to-late February. That month sees the end of the 2012 winter season in my seasonal forecast.
We see warmer temperatures picking up in March 2012 at a good clip for much of the northern hemisphere, so much so that -
mid-March will feel like April
April like May
May like June
June like July
July like August
Spring and summer 2012 are warmer than normal in my outlook for the coming seasons.
So, we have an early and cold winter, to be then followed by an early spring and summer with warmer than normal temperatures.
Those living in the northern regions of North America and Britain should begin to feel winter's bite during the second half of October 2011 with winter running its full course by mid-February 2012 - and giving way to an earlier-than normal spring season that will be quite warm I might add.
In the meantime, it will be quite cold out there from mid-to-late October, November, December and January, so bundle up, but know in advance that Winter 2012 will also end early and give way to warmer-than-normal temperatures with an early spring, a sweltering and true 'barbecue' summer with a warmer than normal autumn season to follow in 2012.
