With thanks to Ratty for posting in the Netherlands Emissions thread. I don't normally look at the Daily Express so didn't see the article Ratty posted: "Britain faces FREEZING winters as slump in solar activity threatens 'little Ice Age'" www.express.co.uk/news/nature/586404/Britain-freezing-winters-slump-solar-activityLooking at what the Met Office said, their headline is precictable: "Scientists show a decline in solar activity could not halt global warming. 23 June 2015 - Return of 'grand solar minimum' could affect European and eastern US winters - but wouldn't halt global warming " Their article here: www.metoffice.gov.uk/news/releases/archive/2015/solar-activityThe arrogance of the assertion that NOTHING can stop global warming (except expensive investment by taxpayers, of course) really gets up my nose.

I wonder if the correlation of solar activity with global temperatures works better with a more accurate temperature series like the satellite temperature anomalies?

Seems too. I don't think our understanding of the effect of the sun and drivers allows anything but speculation.

[ Snip ] I wonder if the correlation of solar activity with global temperatures works better with a more accurate temperature series like the satellite temperature anomalies? I wonder if the correlation of solar activity with global temperatures actually WAS working well with the late 20th century temperature rise ... but what would I know?

That was rather silly of them....They probably spent too much time building those models that cause them to get long range forecasts wrong all the time. The models make them get it wrong because they should be doing science not making stuff, and anyway...the contract is probably right there under the pile if 2x2 ubiquitous plastic building block everyone buys that are made in Denmark. Apparently they make so many models there must be piles and piles of the stuff. Anyway, if they can't get over modelling and getting forecasts right, they deserve to lose the contract, I hope they never find it.

I think this is an example of a petulant BBC management coming home and kicking the dog. A that-will-teach-the-politicians-to-threaten-to-privatize-us moment.

There's 2 parts to the Met. ...there's the usual weather forecasting. ..which is fine and I trust that as much as any other. The problem is the climate forecasting. .and general responsibility for climate data...eg temp record.
