So a vessel becomes trapped in remnants of the collapsed nose of the Mertz glacier and the press call it 'sea ice'? We've all seen the piccies that the crew have been shooting whilst stuck and so we're all aware of the ice cores they have taken from the ice. Pretty soon we'll be able to plot just which of the recent calving events this ice field came from but did we not see the whole snout, which used to project quite away into the Southern Ocean, break off a couple of years ago?
Also 'heavy rain' forced them to abandon the last rescue attempt....very cold.....
The other point to muse is their position, 100 nautical miles off shore. What does logic (and CT ice coverage graphics) tell you about actual 'sea ice' cover at that locale?
You do enjoy a good story don't you? Sadly reality has to have some input into your life surely?

Well what do you expect? The record sea ice must be a result of ice that accumulated and did not melt.

You're kidding right? Who paid for this junket? Yes Graymatter, it's so hot in Antarctica, it produced more ice area than any date for this time of year on record. But as you so eloquently explained, it's "different" ice now than 35 years ago. Has Neven gotten off his meds since his meltdown after the Arctic rowboat clowns epic fail?

Auroa Australis has been placed on standby again to assist the Xuelong which has now officially told the Australian safety authority it is having problems getting out of the ice. Earlier the Auroa was once again en route to Casey Base for the pre-existing resupply mission. A few hours ago Auroa was proceeding at one quarter of a knot to the north west in thick ice, but information is sparce, the web cam photo is not updated on a timely basis and those on board dont seem willing to inform the rest of us what is going on. Interestingly the Chinese boat is Ukrainian built and has iceclass 1B meaning it can travel at 5kts thru 80cm ice. The Chinese helicopter is Russian built. I am unsure of the ice classification of the trapped Russian boat built in Finland - but evidently the crew appeared to be happy to wait it out unless they have been ordered to do so. Potentially these boats could sink if conditions do not improve, however all along we were told the passengers were in no danger. If there was no danger then why not just sit tight and wait for conditions to improve? So many aspects of this story do not add up. Warmist Prof Turney is currently tweeting how releaved he is to be on Auroa heading home rather than being diverted to rescue operations. The guy sounds like he could be about to have a nervous breakdown. He says he slept well for the first time in two weeks. What has changed if they were all safe on the Russian boat? It appears despite the Russians being cool about their entrapment the tourists were crapping themselves. Turney is now going to again have to do one of his many 'how dissapointing' announcements to declare the boat is still on standbye for a rescue mission created by him. It could easily be all too much for him. twitter.com/ProfChrisTurneyEdit: Auroa is in easier ice conditions now and the darker cloud cover of open water appears to be visible on the horizon

Of more importance this press release level 'research' trip appears to have cost the Australian Antarctic research their entire contingency funds and screwed up the brief summer period research of several countries as resupply vessels Xue Long and Aurora spent their time in the rescue of these idiots. It also appears that the reason they got stuck was the expedition leader did not take note of the Russian Captain's warnings to return immediately to the ship and instead dawdled making visits by ATV to the huts Mawson left behind. The result being a delay ensuring that their ship could not escape from the pack ice. You can mess around with AGW games posing for the Guardian and BBC, and nobody really cares, but if you screw up their research AND eat their funding by messing about they are likely to have a total sense of humour failure.

CO2 the humor of it all. Penance needs to be done! Maybe a tithe to Al Gore and then bind oneself with leather? "Forest needed to cover carbon footprint of icy rescue" "The hapless Australasian Antarctic Expedition is finally homeward bound - and thousands of trees will have to be planted to offset the carbon footprint from the prolonged rescue effort. The Russian research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy became stuck in thick pack ice some 3000km southwest of Bluff on Christmas Eve. The 52 passengers, including six New Zealanders, spent eight days trapped before a helicopter from the Chinese ship Xue Long transferred them to Australian vessel Aurora Australis, which will take them to Hobart. Yesterday, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the Xue Long's attempt to manoeuvre through the ice had been unsuccessful and it was now also beset by ice. The expedition had pledged to plant about 800 kauri trees in Northland to cover its carbon footprint. Environmentalists believe planting trees helps to offset the impact of burning fuels such as diesel. But former Act Party leader and Herald on Sunday columnist Rodney Hide said that would have to increase to about 5000 trees to make up for the fossil fuels burned in the rescue. Expedition leader Chris Turney said more trees would be needed than earlier estimated but he was yet to work out how many." link

Actuallly, the Polar Star was in Australia gearing up to keep the supply route sealane to Antarctic research stations open. It's been retasked from that to rescue. That's the real story is that the limited research window is being consumed rescuing these idiots. The reason thy are stuck is despite the Captains request to reboard, the sight-seers dawdled, and he stayed instead of stranding them. Seasonal sea ice will continue to decline until March. If the hulls aren't crushed by compaction, they have a window to get the ships out. The head "scientist" of this junket needs to be sacked for the research he has sabotaged.

Strangely as far as i can tell Auroa Australis is now on a direct route to Hobart Tasmanian instead of Casey Antarctic base. No media about this though. Seems a bit odd.

I can see now i was totally muddled up by the track report and had not noticed the X marking the position Yes they are retracing their way back to Casey
Casey resupply had begun but was suspended due to the rescue priority. They were due to leave Casey December 30th.
www.antarctica.gov.au/media/news/2014/australian-icebreaker-takes-aboard-passengers-from-trapped-vessel
"“The main objective of the current voyage of the Aurora Australis was the resupply of Casey station, so our immediate priority is to return to Casey and finish the job that was underway prior to the ship’s diversion, before returning to Hobart."
m.theage.com.au/environment/government-to-foot-400000-antarctica-bill-20140104-30amx.html?skin=iphone
"forced the Australian Government to interrupt the resupply of Casey base and steam to the rescue, leaving some polar researchers' gear on board Aurora Australis.
"Short- and long-term impacts on the Australian science program are pronounced as you can imagine," said American research professor Joe McConnell in an e-mail to The New York Times.'
"Many of these guys can't complete the research they've been planning for years because some or all of their science gear still is on the Aurora," said Dr McConnell, of Nevada's Desert Research Institute, who was at Casey for the ice-drilling project.
The boat is now heading directly North for Hobart. You would imagine it either drops the passengers off there and returns to Antarctica or it transfers stuff to Polar Star or something else is done to resolve the situation.
It is strange there is no media on what is happening.

If I were that group I would stop junketing and twittering and facebook etc., and keep my head down. There are a LOT of very very upset serious researchers who have had their plans and more importantly their funding shot by Turney and his motley crew. Academics will put up with a lot of stupidity from other academics - but if you touch their funding they rapidly become very upset and will throw their toys a long way out of the crib. There are also some very powerful agencies involved that will have had their operations delayed or had to abandon them. Turney will not escape in the way other AGW proponents have escaped their stupidities. It may be that his near future is as an assistant professor at a 3rd rate university (polytechnic) back in UK. All the PhD students and postdocs with him will have to keep their heads down and hope their names are not linked to him.

Code was right about the boats course. The Auroa is indeed heading back to Casey and is now about two days away.
