Earliest was April 20. You can download their brochure here and it has a calendar with all the dates. Core dates are April 28 to May 12. Outside of that no day has had more than two with May 20 and April 20 both having 2. It has not occurred on 6 days in the April 20 to May 20 window, all outside of the core dates above. www.nenanaakiceclassic.com/2014%20broch.pdf

Had to look today as the deadline is nearing. I think it will be an early break up as well.

The ice is still firmly intact with a slight build today.

From previous records we should expect a date between 28th.April and 8th.May Any date before or after these is unusual.

My ticket is toast! I was so sure it was going to go out way early this year. My friends in AK reported an extreemly warm dry winter... However, I think there was a long cold snap, that combined with little snow to insulate the ice got the thickness up to normal. I also think there is a tradeoff in the spring. On one hand there is no snow around to keep it cool. On the other hand, there is not a huge amount of runoff to stress the ice.

Dontgetoutmuch, I think you lived up to your name by drawing our attention to Nenana last year? There is quite a good article on the Ice Classic here www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2014/03/the-nenana-ice-classic-and-climate/They suggest 3rd.May most likely The graph is interesting. They have drawn an overall downward trend, but failed to notice, or conveniently overlooked, the clearly defined up/down variation 1917-40 Down 1940-63 Up 1963-98 Down 1998-2013 Up Looks familiar! Their suggested date of 3rd.May would continue to emphasise the current upward trend We await with interest this year's date! Perhaps somebody with a more analytical mind than myself may be able to correlate with other up/down natural variations. Had a quick look at HadCRUT4 the up/down trends seem to correlate quite well.
