It must be just the yanks that have trouble with understanding temps where it straddles the state change of water? Most other folk understand that when it's really cold the air does not hold moisture and so it doesn't snow. If AGW bumps that temp up by 20c then , though it is a lot less cold, it might snow........ to the Yanks this means passing on a snowball to their senator so he can marvel in the House at such in a warming world......... ho hum.....
The West of Siberia is not showing any snow cover anoms for the time of year so their '7 months of snow in October' WACCy event does not seem to carry over into spring? This is sad when you consider the images coming from the permafrost there last year with huge methane domes and wobbly land surfaces......instead of being put back into minus 40f deep freeze that warm ,air filled ,fluffy blanket of snow kept it all on the boil ready for the coming May/June/July max insolation period. Won't that be fun?

Still don't understand how polar ice caps occur....or even ice ages? It must snow when cold surely?

Still don't understand how polar ice caps occur....or even ice ages? It must snow when cold surely? To get precipitation you need convection to carry water vapor higher so it can condense/freeze/accumulate and drop as snow. My understanding is that the convective circulation of the atmosphere normally has descending dry air at the poles. When fronts are carried in they can give snow but the normal condition is a dome of high pressure at the poles. So Greenland will be accumulating snow as will Northern Canada and Siberia but not so much right at the poles.

Still don't understand how polar ice caps occur....or even ice ages? It must snow when cold surely? WELL, I am a Yank, and Sir, I can tell you that is snows when it is -40C. In fact, it can snow copious amounts. In this neck of the woods we usually call heavy snow with winds at -40C a blizzard. Can it happen? I am 64, and I don't remember a winter when it hasn't. But then, it hasn't gotten very warm yet so it might get SO HOT that it snows at -10C too? (And yes, it does that already).........

I'm actually jealous Sig, I love to dig deep and battle elements.. ..usually very mild where I am however!
I feel an important aspect is as Nautonnier said the weather conditions at the poles. Predominantly a high pressure exists which prevents moisture laden air entering the region. It is this which prevents snowfall at the poles, the build-up of ice mass is because any precipitation that does fall remains there for perpetuity (unless GWs ideas are correct....)

I like their interpretation. But one paragraph stands out. Above all these figures are two rows of nested ‘v-shapes’, and above these at the top of the pillar are a row of three ‘handbags’, each with an accompanying small zoomorphic carving. The left-most ‘handbag’ accompanies another ‘bentbird’ figure, although this particular bird is slightly different to the previous one, in that it has small arms or wings and the downward wriggling snake or fish is absent. The middle ‘handbag’ is accompanied by a standing or charging quadruped of some type, perhaps a gazelle, goat or ibex, with large horns or ears bent backwards over its body. Alternatively, if it is pictured facing the other direction, it might depict a crouching rat, with a long tail over its back. The rightmost ‘handbag’ accompanies a downward crawling quadruped, giving the impression of a frog.I think that here they missed the message. It clearly states ... "Grab the luggage and fly, run or crawl for your life!" Ratty is even mentioned.
