Neil, Near as I can tell the ice went out April 23 last year. alaska-native-news.com/tripod-holds-firm-as-record-breaking-nenana-ice-classic-jackpot-is-declared-10124Surprisigly, I found this from the National Snow and Ice Data Center... The Tanana River in the interior of Alaska freezes over during October and November. The ice continues to grow throughout the winter accumulating an average maximum thickness of 110 cm, depending upon winter weather conditions. The Nenana River Ice Classic competition began in 1917 when railroad engineers bet a total of 800 dollars, winner take all, guessing the exact time (month, day, hour, minute) the Tanana River ice would break. Each year since then, Alaska residents have guessed at the timing of ice breakup. A tripod (connected to an on-shore clock that stops when the ice breaks) is planted in approximately a half meter of river ice during freeze-up in October or November. The following spring, the clock automatically stops when the tripod moves determining the official time of ice breakup. Many factors influence ice breakup, such as air temperature, ice thickness, snow cover, wind, water temperature, and depth of water below the ice. Generally, ice on the Tanana River breaks up in late April or early May (historically, April 20 to May 20). The time series of the Nenana ice breakup dates can be used to indicate climate change in the region. nsidc.org/data/docs/daac/nsidc0064_nenana.gd.html

I think it will go in the next few days, early but not unusually so. I think before noon on the 25th. (Unless I'm wrong.) So let me be the first to congratulate you Niel on you glorious victory!!!
Is it just me, or can you see the Pause on Neil's graph?

Tripod collapsing. Looks like the end is upon us. www.nenanaakiceclassic.com/21st March to 23rd. April = 42 days on above graph. Early but not exceptional. To spot its decline I too must not be get out much. 42 days on the above graph does seem to confirm the "pause" since that dramatic rapid melt in 1999/2000

It might be the 22nd. Tripod is tipped, but still hasn't broken the line. Neil, going to be a really close one!

I have added the AMO to the break up date graph Notice that the AMO peaked at 1940 and 2000 Thereafter the AMO starts to fall and in both cases the break up date extends.
Can someone explain how I can adjust the sizing to put the x axis on the similar scales?
