I'm glad that there is an Arctic Methane Emergency Group. I feel so much safer. Their AGM must be 'fascinating' :-D

Their AGM must be 'fascinating' :-D I have an idea that their meetings may be held in Curacao or the Antilles where they will squeeze 8 hours work into 10 days. These meetings are never held in places like Detroit or Wigan or -perish the thought- somewhere like Svalbard.

I think we will get another look at the offshore East Siberian shelf sea deposits this summer as the deposits continue into Yamal where we spotted the craters last year. We already have a few suspects to watch develop over the season? As it is Shakhova's team measured 'chimneys off the shore there in 2011 that were a few meters across. On her return in 2012 they had blossomed to over 1 km across! Are these the same features, as those now appearing on Yamal, but controlled by the waters above? It is critical that we attack this methane catastrophe today! For only a small new tax of 10% (More then you make.) We can save the planet. Additionally your malevolent er... benevolent government might have to tread on a few freedoms here and there. But, think of the children! After all, it is you (somehow) that is responsible for the methane pouring out of the seabed. (Somehow, we're sure of it, trust us.) We are pretty sure that it only started yesterday, but it will consume the planet in a vast fireball by next week if steps are not taken today! Now is not the time for democracy, fascism is not THAT bad, and it is the only thing that can save us. Really!

My Geology master, back in 82' assured us that the Siberian shelf sea deposits would not be an issue for thousands of years due to the permanent sea ice that sat above them......we're now closing on 20 years without permanent ice cover over them.
20 years to get rid of the ice that would never leave in thousands of years and 2 years for craters a few metres across to blossom into structures over 1 km across....
Spin it how you choose but please do not remain ignorant of the changes ongoing!

Spin it how you choose but please do not remain ignorant of the changes ongoing! Are these changes somehow different than that changes documented approx 5,000 YBP? Somehow, I don't think so. The current rate of methane release is a speck of sand on the beach compared to the levels documented in paleo data from 8-5000 years before present. Climate is NOT a static event, no matter how much you seem to think it should be. There have always been storms, warm spells, cold spells etc. The benefit to all life on earth of a warmer climate is so huge, that to wish that warmth away is nuts Graywolf!
