One of the biggest issues is with energy prices going up and up....people on low income/pension may have to choose between food or heat These choices will be at the forefront if next weeks predicted cold comes. ...

The number of deaths in UK due to cold and energy poverty typically in a winter month are 4 to 5 times the annual road deaths. If the road deaths spiked to the level of deaths from cold panic would break out in Parliament with emergency debates etc. When it is deaths due to cold of old and poor people - the UK members of parliament are completely uninterested. It may be that anyone highlighting the deaths would also highlight the involvement of parliament in the large jump in UK energy prices by the imposition of the Climate Change Act (only one MP voted against it). The Climate Change Act just happened to enrich many of the members of parliament and their families the money coming from their poorer constituents who are dying due to the higher cost of energy.

I was out in -22C a few times last week for only short periods and got pretty cold around my face and hands. I never have bought myself a decent pair of gloves but when I had to pick up my daughter from a bus stop I put the oven gloves on over the ordinary gloves and made sure I had a few extra layers on.

Layers are the key. When out for long periods I use mitts and moon boots.

Bought a milwaukee heated jacket a few years back....so nice! It's not that it really heats you, but you don't have to expend loads of energy staying warm

I agree. Wool is such an amazing product. Keeps you cool in summer, toasty warm in winter. Cotton may be a bit better in summer as a wick, but wool stays dry because of the makeup of the hair.
I wear wool socks year round, have a wool stocking cap, and a wool coat. The coat isn't heavy, but it is warm, same as the cap. I have wool liners for my leather mitts. I love wool!
Flea.........are you talking -12C or -12F?
