This looks like it tracks pretty well with the AMO. If the raw figures were available, it would be interesting to plot them together. A new index?? Here is a clearer view with a 15 year moving average. It seems the raw data is available in paper form but not online.

That's spelled CO2LD. And it's all our fault.

I'll see if I can find the table with the numbers. Don't have a scanner do you?

Seeing reports that there are indications a sudden stratispheric warming event is in the offing. Possibly be affecting the troposphere end of this month, in which case.....2 in 3 chance north Europe gets cold run till end of winter....
I've seen nothing that explains any effects in N America? Do they exist?

Do they exist? It depends on where in the Arctic the SW takes place. If this does in fact come to pass, watch the Greenland high position. That high is the predominant mover and shaker of North American weather.

Do they exist? Joe's weekly summary has some good graphics for it showing the cold sliding down over Europe. However, don't worry ... it's really just Donald Trump letting off a little steam. Expect more throughout the year.

I have written to the contact man for this data at the Finnish weather bureau I got a reply from FMI. They asked me where the information would be displayed and why I wanted to use it. I wrote back giving some background about a conversation on the internet but I was not wanting to cause any trouble for them and the ice extents could be read sufficiently well from the chart but it would be nicer to have the raw data. I am assuming I will not hear back from them again.

Pride in data collection since 1720!!! The 300th aniversary of one of the world's oldest climatic data bases? Is this a standard bureaucratic reaction? After all, the KGB already has it.

Yes i was dissapointed by their initial response. So much so i could not be bothered to grind away at their resistance I am fairly sure the data is just a compilation of various research papers. If you google baltic Ice winters since 1720 you will quite quickly find the various *old* papers the graph is created from. Probably the old papers also do not have the original data. Eg www.oaj.tsv.fi/index.php/fennia/article/download/4403/5744

In other words, the dog ate the data. Amazing isn't it?

In a world of meaningless weather statistics, I've decided to add one more. Our own little thread suggests that 2016 is going to be a record year (in something). We have already accumulated 6 pages of posts!!! Do you realize that at this rate we will bury our 'Weather 2015' posts??? I can't explain it ... and because I can't, it's a travesty. Obviously going to be the the HOTTEST YEAR EVER! We're toast!
