yup it was if I remember correctly 17X larger than the unprecedented flood some 10 years ago in California.
We now live in the world of anecdote, the medium is twitter.
I tell my daughter when she fiddles on Twitter to discover the meaning of what a twit is.
worth a look.

Major floods in my neck of the woods: Brisbane Flood History. The Great Floods of 1893: FWIW, we rarely see cyclones this far South of recent times.

Don't forget that big one in the bible? GW, NOAA issued the warning and built the Ark and you're here contributing as a result.

Climate change is real. As is global warming...But then, there are people who live in eternal denial and think that the global warming phenomenon is a hoax. Unfortunately, global warming has been reduced to the most popular essay or debate topic rather than being treated as a serious issue! I'm least surprised that there are so many descriptive essays on global warming than any other topic out there! I don't think the climate change is "abrupt". It is something we set off back when we first took our planet for granted and it is apparent that we are in no mood to stop!

NO matter what man does or doesn't do, the climate will change. That seems to be an item that AGW alarmists continue to forget. Climate is always in a state of flux, hence the term chaotic. Our current understanding of the actual drivers of said change is not very good. There are lots of statements made that have no merit, but are regarded as proof. The paleo record shows us lots of information, most of it is not looked at with the thinking it needs.

Zoey, Climate change can be quite abrupt; it just depends what scale you're using. If you're using weekly, monthly or yearly scales you won't see it. Modern day "climatology" is grouped in 30-year chunks and even that is far too small for some of the major cycles that affect the planet. As a result, you'll miss the forest for the trees. Also, the planet is a living thing, but it isn't conscious. It has no idea when we "took it for granted." Significant climate change happened many, many times well before humans made prints in the dirt. Earth took a lot of very hard slams, climate wise, before we showed up. She recovers...

Code - Do you know if the blob rolled around during the 1996-97 El Nino (and others for that matter)? And, if so, how did the temperatures react during those episodes?

Code - Do you know if the blob rolled around during the 1996-97 El Nino (and others for that matter)? And, if so, how did the temperatures react during those episodes? Yes the blob is associated with El Ninos. As Code mentioned it wasn't noticed or named. It tends to show up early on in association with El Ninos. This past El Nino was more dramatic than usual. It was also evidenced by a bigger migratory push of warmer water fish northward. But each El Nino tends to start forming with a warm water push up and away from the coast of Peru and one off the northwest coast simultaneously. It most likely is related to the slowing of winds in the north Pacific gyre. Winds along the northwest coast blowing north to south enhances upwelling along the northern coast of the continental US producing cold water. Offshore prevailing trade winds likewise are strong creating more upwelling near the coast of Peru also pushing (or perhaps more correctly "pulling") cold water up. Here is a nice page for reviewing SSTs back to 1996 with archives for previous years near the bottom of the main page. www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/ocean/sst/anomaly/index.html

Code, have you installed the uWx app? Any idea of its effect on battery use? Yes I am running it and haven't noticed any hits to battery, the app is pretty frugal. I've had it up for a few hours now and I think it may be charging the battery. At least, it doesn't seem to have added a noticeable extra load.
