It is interesting. I have not played with it much, but would assume the stations he uses are rural? The plummeting temperatures since 2007 seem to be happening everywhere in the U.S.
Edit: it just occurred to me the plummet is only due to there being just one month of data in January 2016. Doh! Still, cold records are being set in many places in 2016.

BTW, our (at least mine) good friend AstroMet forecast strong cooling would begin in earnest in 2017 as I recall.

It is a nice tool. Would be nicer if you could download the station records ... but it's a freebee so I guess I can't complain. I looked at February temps for those stations along the line of the Missouri River (38-39 N Latitude) from Kansas City to Saint Louis whose records go back to 1896. In all six of these stations, the coldest time period was ~1896-1912, when 5-year mean temps for February averaged from -2 to -3 C. The warmest time periods were the 30s and 50s, when 5-year means averaged from 3 to 4 C, thus a 5 to 7 C range. The 1997-98 period was the last high-temp period. Since then mean February temperatures have declined to 0 to -3 C, or, i.e., below to well below the low temperature period of the 1960s and 1970s that averaged 0 to 1 C. The last data for these stations range from 2009 to 2012 (wonder why). These stations seem to be well on their way back to the 1890s ... although this February will not be one of them. The 1960-80 period was a slightly lower temperature plateau in an otherwise warm 100 year time period. We're declining off the future edge of that warm period ... AND ... at least for these stations, it doesn't look like a repeat of that 0-1C plateau. It's already much colder than that (just not this winter). Two example charts.

I think I can hear agw advocate teeth nashing! ! Where was that heat hiding again? It went to Finland ... only fair I guess. Easier to find when we need it.
