Had a flock of geese fly over day before yesterday. To say that is early is an understatement! I hope I don't see another flock for the next 4 weeks! They "normally" start showing up around end of September. Prime hunting is the 1st two weeks of October. We've had flocks of Canadian Geese coming in for a couple of weeks here. I saw a large flock in a field by my home this week that had 60+ geese grazing together. Is that a normal item? I think I am becoming a Snowflake! I am confused. It is wayyyy to early to have geese flying over here. And you have grazing flocks???

we have a small population of Canadian geese that stay year round but when we see flocks of 15+ in August it is not the norm. I asked my wife if she had seen them too and she saw them on about the same day grazing and thought there were over 100 birds.

I am in Chantilly, Virginia at the moment. Looking out at the car park there are fallen leaves blowing about quite a significant number. Strange seeing some trees in bloom while others are autumnal and dropping their leaves. Temperature this morning around 61F and a cool weekend forecast. Glad I am going back South to Florida.

Newer poster here, from SW Ontario Canada. Beginning about a month ago,I noticed many, unusually large flocks of Canada geese heading roughly toward the south as well as large flocks of other birds. I have never seen such early movement. Naturally I wondered if others have seen the same thing and whether or not there was any scientific reason for this and if any of you had any suspicions about a possible connection with the severity of this coming winter. I realize this is rather hokey and perhaps better suited to some sort of almanac but I would be interested in your thoughts. Howdy Oldguy, back in 2010 or so I heard on the radio a lady from Scotland who swore we were in for a bad winter because the mink were coming down from the mountains with their white winter coats on. She was right. I wish I knew how to find out their situation every year... Would women be a dependable proxy?

Yes there are ladies on the board but as I have already migrated south, I dont think my opinion counts :-) Im in the SW part of Oklahoma and I have to say the end of July and all of Aug has been the nicest since I moved here. We averaged 3 to 15 degrees cooler than normal from about the last week of July and its still holding. We also received rain 2 to 4 times a week sometimes heavy sometimes just enough to give everything a drink but I dont recall that ever happening since I have been here (migrated south in 1980). We have had those low 60's mornings too and I love it.

Wish it would stay, but I'm afraid we are phasing to a lower energy state. I would love to hear more observations from your neck of the woods.

It's been cool in eastern OK since the early part of summer. Have more or less turned off the ac for the year. Also, frequent enough rains that the grass never went dormant, stayed very green all year.

Thanks for the welcome, I have been a lurker since 2008 I enjoy reading and learning from you all. This summer has been very pleasant, we had a few days over 100 around the middle of July but it didn't last, and we received rain weekly. A few of those weeks it rained every other day which is very unusual here for July and August. It has stayed green and lush here which is very very unusual in my neck of the woods.

The white witch is dancing circles in the arctic and old man winter is composing a dirge.
