"Water temperatures across the ocean's surface in the tropical Atlantic Ocean this spring could be offering a hint for what to expect this hurricane season. Throughout the main development region (MDR) of the Atlantic Ocean, sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) at the start of May were running nearly a half-degree Celsius below the 1981-2010 average, according to a tweet from Dr. Phil Klotzbach, a tropical scientist at Colorado State University. The MDR is a swath of the tropical Atlantic Ocean that stretches from Africa's western coast into the Caribbean."weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/2018-05-03-tropical-atlantic-water-temperatures-may-2018-hurricane-season

Atlantic is looking a little cool for hurricanes A little puzzling though - Where is that hot anomaly for the Gulf Stream being generated?

I need not be warmer it may just be displaced surface water to the north. But given the impact of warm water on weather that will move also.

Atlantic is looking a little cool for hurricanes A little puzzling though - Where is that hot anomaly for the Gulf Stream being generated? That has been a consistent feature for at least 4 years. My guess is as the amoc slows, the GS effectively pools at lower latitudes rather then getting the warmer water north. This then allows the lab current to penetrate into the Atlantic as it meets less resistance instead if tracking SW down the coast of the US and pushing cooler water where before it was warmer.. .
