Actually, it snowed at quite low levels just North of Melbourne yesterday. Blizzards in the mountains, and possibly the best start to a snow season for decades. Going to be quite bad tomorrow morning. Might even get snow on the outskirts of Melbourne. Thanks Doug. Every year, about this time, I get to tell the story of how, when I was adjutant of Diploma Cadet Squadron, RAAF Frognall, I stood in the upper storey and watched the snow fall in Canterbury Road. Ah, the memories .... When I was working in North Wales our mountain rescue group would repeatedly go out to rescue the type of couple you show there who thought they would climb up that nice looking valley side dressed totally inadequately and with zero preparation and get caught by bad weather a sudden temperature drop and snow or rain. There they are stuck on the hill in jeans and t-shirts.

It's an easy mistake to make, I've been hiking and get carried away and go several miles further than planned, get up over 11,000 feet, get snowed on in late summer and feel cold and stupid in short sleeves.
Then the shadows in the mountains start getting longer and you aren't completely sure you can make it back down before dark. That's being unprepared
