SSW are very rare in the Southern Hemisphere mainly because there are no geographic features to cause them. The theory is for the Northern Hemisphere that SSW are caused when a Rossby wave in the jet stream becomes a vertical wave due to orographic effects from the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau resulting in a 'breaking wave' in the stratosphere that impacts the polar vortex effectively stalling or even reversing it. What can cause a similar effect in the Southern jets?

Alarmist! It is somewhat interesting that it is snowing in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres at latitudes closer to the equator than one would expect at the time of year.
