By Friday Middle Earth is forecast to be 14 F BELOW normal. Night time lows dropping to 35 F. Only exceeded for Oct 11th 13 times in our 126-year series. Last time was 2009. Hmmm. Time to bring in the potted plants.

They say history repeats itself. We have all heard the lore about the year without a summer. The dreary weather that summer kept Shelly, Byron and Co. inside during their Swiss summer vacation. To pass the time the decided to have a contest who could pen the best ghost story. Hence we have Frankenstein. The spectacular sunsets, early summer snows, frosts and freezes. Crop failures, famine and hardship. This sunset photo was taken during the Monday Night Football game at San Fran this past Monday. Does anything look familiar? It was not the size of Tambora in 1816 but there was a pretty big Russian Eruption that seemed to have been swept under the rug. From Spaceweather.com

You high latitude folks get all the good stuff first. By the time it gets to us, you'll have 6 foot drifts. Reminds me of an old Filipino term for ferry berths located at the bow. They call it "first air".

Today's high is forecast to be 47 F. That would be the coldest reported high temperature for October 11th in our 129-year record going back to 1890. Three years had a colder earlier date: 45F on Oct. 7, 2000; 46F on Oct. 9, 1990 and 46F on Oct. 10, 1987. The 1987 and 2000 dates were both near the end of solar minimums. In 1909 a high of 42 F was recorded for October 12th, which was at the beginning of solar minimum. October 14th of 2009 recorded a high of 45 F preceding the notorious winter of 2009-10, which was also the second coldest October in the record.

Very cold & wet here today. 15.8°C approaching noon. 13.9°C in Brisbane. Glad I didn't sell my coat. PS: It's my fault: I put the batteries back in the remotes for the ceiling fans last week. LATER (1150hrs): Dropped to 14.5°C !!!!!
