For as long as the sun shines ... and the wind blows ... and the transformers don't.

I wonder if this is the start of problems on the national grid because of wind turbines, in the UK we rarely get any power cuts but at the moment there is a storm crossing the country with wind speeds changing from calm to gale force in minutes. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49300025

And if this had been the dead of winter? Did that back in Flagstaff, AZ one winter. The newer gas furnaces require power, or they shut down. Amazing how fast a house can get cold. When the wind don't blow ... and the sun don't shine ... and the coal and gas are verboten. When I was a kid, one stand-alone gas heater in the living room was the heat for the whole house. One gas valve and a pilot light. As long as there was gas, there was heat ... and multiple people with their butts backed up to it. Oh, the good old days.

"Huge power cut paralyses Britain: One million people are affected as blackouts hit homes, airports, traffic lights and trains across the country after 'failure of the National Grid'
Blackouts were reported in London and the South East today, as well as Midlands and North East of England Victoria Line was plunged into darkness as result of the outage which affected millions across the country Power cuts caused by problem with two generators, according to National Grid Electricity System Operator It is now investigating the cause of the problem, which has been 'resolved' although some disruption remains The National Cyber Security Centre's incident management team has been in touch with the National Grid Although after an investigation the centre said 'there is no evidence the issue was related to a cyber incident' Those caught up in chaos have described 'apocalyptic' scenes with commuters disembarking trains on tracks"www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7342081/Major-power-cuts-UK-hit-airports-traffic-lights-trains.htmlThis was apparently caused by 2 generators failing due to instability in the grid. It was on a warm July day and there is almost no air con load in UK. Imagine the same on a snowy February night when the load would be considerably more. So much for electric cars.

We've fixed the problem here in Oz: We pay manufacturers to stop working, turn off the production lines to avoid blackouts. ThirdFourth World?

I only realised there was a power cut as kid called from home, i was local but driving. Realised traffic lights/petrol stations were off/dark. Stopped to check internet, none. Drove 10 miles to find 4g (yeah....i have to have internet 🙄) there was a list of postcodes effected on one news site, i could've scrolled for another 10mins and not reached the end of that....(weird how this list was generated and dispersed so rapidly??)

"Energy watchdog demands answers after power cut causes travel mayhem
Energy watchdog Ofgem has demanded an urgent report from National Grid after a major power cut caused travel chaos and cut electricity for almost one million people in England and Wales.
More than 900,000 customers have had their power restored following blackouts late on Friday afternoon after what the National Grid Electricity System Operator said were issues with two generators.
The power cut stopped traffic lights from working, plunged Newcastle Airport into darkness, affected Ipswich Hospital and caused huge disruption on the railways during the busy Friday night commute.
Ofgem said on Friday night: “In any incident the priority is to get power restored to customers as quickly as possible. National Grid has now informed Ofgem that the system has been restored.
“However, Ofgem understands the frustration this power cut has caused consumers. Ofgem has asked for an urgent detailed report from National Grid so we can understand what went wrong and decide what further steps need to be taken. This could include enforcement action.”.........
......Professor Tim Green, co-director of the Energy Futures Laboratory, Imperial College London, believes the two generators disconnected were at Little Barford and Hornsea.
He said: “The first generator to disconnect was a gas fired plant at Little Barford at 16:58. Two minutes later Hornsea Offshore wind farm seems to have disconnected. “This might be linked to disturbance caused by first generator failing; might not.
“We will need to wait for National Grid’s full technical investigation to get to bottom of that.”"www.itv.com/news/2019-08-09/energy-watchdog-demands-answers-after-power-cut-causes-travel-mayhem/

Looking at the post above in particular the map. A gas fired power station failed on the East Coast and a North Sea windfarm tripped off possibly due to loss of synch with the grid. That was enough to cause failures from Glasgow to London to Cornwall on a low load time in daylight temperatures ~70F/21C. Imagine the same scenario in a high load early evening in midwinter temperatures - and remember the virtue signalling politicians are CLOSING baseload power stations.
This stupidity will kill people.

I see Naut posted a detailed report, however heres a paragraph where officials are quick to dampen suggestions of issues wind.
So its definitely a thing then, or why the need to mention it....

Brussels getting into the act "A widespread power outage plunged parts of the Belgian capital Brussels into darkness on Thursday night.
Pictures posted on social media showed blacked-out streets, lit only by a handful of car headlights and torches.
The power outage hit the neighbourhoods of Schaerbeek, Evere and Saint-Josse,
Sibelga, the power company, and Elia, the network operator, confirmed there was a fault in the city's electricity grid and said power was gradually being restored to affected areas.
The power failure reportedly began at about 22.45 local time (21:45 GMT).
Traffic lights were reportedly knocked out in parts of the city.
The cause of the power failure is still unknown."www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38927000With all the interconnectors there could easily be an EU wide event

Yes it's quite windy in Belgium and Germany. There was a paper on the percentage of intermittent 'renewables' that was feasible before the grid becomes unstable. It was quite a low number.
