Here's one for the rugged outdoors type: Many people try to keep cows from wandering freely. But I know their inner pain. I'm very sensitive to a cow's moooods. And mooooving along.

"Hydrogen is big news but is it really the answer to de-carbonisation?
As we begin to emerge from the covid lockdown there is a lot of talk about a “green recovery” and “building-back green”, with a renewed focus on hydrogen. Last week the Confederation of British Industry (“CBI”) with the University of Birmingham called on the government to ban the installation of conventional gas boilers in homes from 2025 and phasing out all fossil fuel heating systems by 2050. It says that from this date, heat pumps, hybrid systems, and hydrogen-ready boilers should be installed instead.
In its annual report, the Committee on Climate Change (“CCC”) cites hydrogen production and carbon storage infrastructure as one of its five national infrastructure priorities for the next 30 years. A recent report from Aurora Energy Research suggests that hydrogen could satisfy up to half of the UK’s total energy needs by 2050.
National Grid has also got in on the action, stating in its latest Future Energy Scenarios that the fuel will be essential for achieving net zero ambitions:"More here:> watt-logic.com/2020/08/11/hydrogen/It does not seem to make sense to use energy to create hydrogen to store energy to use later... Hydrogen is really nasty stuff to deal with too.

"CAISO President: California Power Grid teetering close to the edge of collapse
In response to rolling blackouts over the weekend, California ISO President Steve Berber warned that California must maintain its current electricity reserves or risk ‘collapse of the entire system of California and perhaps the entire West.’
Berber:
“You are trading the loss of 3000 megawatts for the collapse of the entire system of California and perhaps the entire West. […] When you’re at the very edge and you have a contingency and you have no operating reserves, you risk entire system collapse.”"Lots more here:> wattsupwiththat.com/2020/08/18/operators-fighting-with-politicians-to-keep-grid-from-collapse/It would appear that California is relying on unicorns and the cooperation of neighboring states to supply power if California's goes down They are all out of unicorns and the neighboring states are not so likely to just supply power to California if they are threatening the entire western grid stability.

"California Blackouts: It’s Not Just the Heat, It’s Also the Anti-Nuclear Power Stupidity
Activists oppose a huge source of reliable, climate-friendly electricity that could have prevented the rolling blackouts in the Golden State.
RONALD BAILEY | 8.19.2020 12:31 PM
Rolling electric power blackouts afflicted as many as 2 million California residents last week as a heat wave gripped the Golden State. (It’s apparently eased up for now.) At the center of the problem is that power demand peaks as overheated people turn up their air conditioning in the late afternoon just as solar power supplies cut off as the sun goes down. In addition, output from California’s wind farms was erratic. Currently, about 33 percent of California’s electricity comes from renewable sources as mandated by state law. Until this summer, California utilities and grid operators were able to purchase extra electricity from other states, but the current heat wave stretches from Texas to Oregon so there was little to none available to make up for California’s power shortage.
…
Completely ignored in the reporting is that California has been shutting down a huge source of safe, reliable, always-on, non-carbon dioxide–emitting, climate-friendly electricity—that is, nuclear power. In 2013, state regulators forced the closing of the San Onofre nuclear power plant that supplied electricity to 1.4 million households. By 2025, California regulators plan to close down the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant that can supply electricity to 3 million households."More here:> wattsupwiththat.com/2020/08/20/california-blackout-fury-its-not-just-the-heat-its-also-the-anti-nuclear-power-stupidity/UK is of course going the same way while adding EV mandates that increase the demand

I wonder how long before someone in the CA government starts "rationing" power such that "red" counties see frequent blackouts while "blue" counties somehow keep running?

Hitachi has withdrawn from a Nuclear power project that would have built a new nuclear power station at Wylfa near Amlwch on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales. (I lived on Anglesey decades ago). The effect is that UK will be moving into the California level of reliable base load power as it deliberately shuts down fossil fuel and nuclear generation capacity and replaces them with windfarms. All heavy industry will need to leave UK tallbloke.wordpress.com/2020/09/16/hitachi-withdraws-from-20bn-nuclear-project/

[ Snip] Wales has been called the “land of artists’ impressions” with many big schemes that are talked about and never happen. Not just Wales: Everything here goes thru various coloured papers, think tanks, focus groups, stakeholders, public submissions, etc. That process is followed by implementation. Implementation is followed by public outcry and protest. Thought you'd like to know .....

A little primitive for this board and he doesn't mention 'dispatchable' power, but you may know someone with a PhD in Climate 'Science' that could do with the information

"Climate FAIL: Working from Home Would Overload Australia’s Renewable Energy Grid
The Aussie Government ABC has advised people to commute to the office rather than trying to work from home, to prevent blackouts caused by everyone working from home switching on their air conditioners."wattsupwiththat.com/2020/09/21/aussie-climate-fail-working-at-home-would-overload-the-renewable-energy-grid/Now add the electric cars and the still to be shut down fossil fuel generation capacity. It seems that politicians in the 'west' have a malaise - a new disease lock down the economy, net zero green deals which will shut down the economy. California, UK (just announced that all cars should be EV in 9 years time), Australia not enough power for people to stay home ... This is what happens when you have professional politicians with zero understanding of how things work.
