Oh my gosh, look at the Xray imagery brighten up as those old sunspots (1121,1123,1131,1133) come marching back home again. Attachments:

Hmm, that increase in Xray brightness can't be a "global" solar phenomenon. It's changing too fast. On Monday the image was very dim, yesterday very bright, now it's very dim again.
Is somebody at the GOES ground station twiddling with the "brightness knob" on these images? Is there any scientific reason for the brightness changes?
Why can't they calibrate the pixels in these images in [logarithmic] proportion to the estimated Xray radiance w/m2?

The old AR1121 region is rotating now over the SE limb, bristling with magnetic activity, as you can see in this SOHO EIT 195A image. This will be its fourth appearance Earth-side. Started out as AR1112 months ago, remarkable for its activity, numerous C and M level flares (compared to other SC24 regions). Attachments:

... Here's the same view in 171A light, which renders the magnetic lines better, I think. [SOHO EIT 171] Attachments:

That article is shocking. What is more shocking is that either - 1) it seems to be part of a co-ordinated media campaign of propaganda -or- 2) shows how completely incompetant the media are : Here is the same/similar story. It appears in dozens of outlets around the world already, and by tomorrow will be in HUNDREDS of stories : news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20101229/sc_afp/sciencespacesuntelecomsscience.mynucleus.org/story/2010/12/29/_s_afp_20101229_sc_afp_sciencespacenews.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews/World/Story/A1Story20101229-255321.htmlIt would be difficult to write a more dishonest and factually incorrect acrticle than that. Infact, it`s so radically dishonest, that either our media are deliberately writing propaganda now, or they are so totally incompetant that they dont even bother with basic journalistic principals like checking the facts.... ie, that the cycle started in late 08/early 09, and that will be THE mildest cycle in the history of "technological" 20th century man, and that this cycle will almost certainly cause the LEAST problems of any in living memory.

Looks like "journalism" is now nothing more than story writing, true or false, just to write a story that someone might read because it sounds interesting.

A C1.3 Xray flare occurred in AR1138 this morning, peaking at 0425Z. The Nobeyama radio heliograph captured the event in microwaves, where it rumbled on for an additional 20 minutes or so. Looks like solar activity is picking up. The microwave heliograph was completely flat last week. Now I can see "active microwave regions" in several places: AR1138, AR1139 and old AR1121 and AR1131 just rotating into view. There is also a bright microwave region around zero longitude in the North. solar.nro.nao.ac.jp/norh/html/10mins/2010/12/31/movie.html[The weird rippling waves at the beginning of the movie are caused by local weather in Japan I think] Attachments:

Old AR1131 has swung back into view, still bearing a visible sunspot. It has shrunk a little, but is still a decent sized spot. Attachments:

Ohhhh yes. 2011 coming as well. The period of the solar maximum starts. Fasten your seat belts guys. And prepare your telescopes. Today we have 1)the return of the old region 1131 at the NE of the disk. The region has big sunspot. 2) Another "flash" region coming from the north center of the disk and has sunspots. 3) We have a great structure of filaments at the south of the disk. www.solar-007.eu/

Newbie here. Just stumbled across the Hathaway Animated Sunspot Prediction put together by David Bradbury, and I was wondering is anyone was working on an update to include the latest, and rather severely reduced, predictions by Hathaway et. al.?

@theo > 3) We have a great structure of filaments at the south of the disk. This is a fantastic image(bottom of page). It happens to be the same spot (below) where the monster filament appeared on 5 Dec, (one rotation ago) between the areas of old 1123 and 1121. Still appears to be very active. Your Coronado system is providing a valuable service to us, since the SDO real-time images are shut down. Tnx Attachments:

Kevin posted the animated Hathaway predictions in Jan 2009 for activity up to that time. His latest prediction is shown on this link below: sc25.com/index.php?tid=6
