BradK, you cannot compare US and other countries mil spending for a variety of reasons. Cost of equipment for example. The US pays $1600 for an M-16; China sells the more effective AK-47 for less than $60. The US pays an E-1 $1457 a month, China <$12. From the limited data available, on an adjusted cost per weapon/man/ship basis China spends somewhat more than double the US for "defense."
But that begs the question, which was "what would we do with a trillion dollars?" Given a small fraction of that, I would pay to fully investigate some tantalizing hints that "electric propulsion" may actually be feasible. And that $200 or so worth of thorium might well take you to interstellar space and bring you back. If a working prototype can be built, I would blow the rest of the 1T on spaceflight. And colonies to get at least a seed stock of humanity off this vulnerable planet.

Stranger: What that tells us is that the US is a very poor manager of our precious tax dollars. Or else someone is really making a killing.
