As the general gaussian strength goes down, is there any data in the magnetic complexity of the sunspot. It's seems that a strong magnetic field would produce very defined "white on the right" spots (depending on solar cycle/hemisphere) but a messy and convoluted sunpsot as the intensity goes goes down. Has anyone studied the complexity percentages of SC23 with SC24 to see if complexity is changing at all?

'Complexity' is hard to quantity so there is no definite study of this yet, but the new data from SDO should help on that. We know that sunspot groups that rotate, twist, and turns are more prolific producers of flares.

That is an interesting thought, as Dr. Svalgaard pointed out to me, the Carrington flare happened during the relatively weak solar cycle 10, thus if weak cycles do have magnetically weaker spots...
