Dr. Svalgaard, When the poles get near reversing isn't there an increasing swarm of sunspots with reversed leading/trailing magnetic poles? Have those indications begun to appear in large numbers yet? Thanks. No, the poles reverse in the middle of a cycle and the spot polarities maintain their occurrence until near the end of the cycle. There can at any time be a small number [some 3% of all] of reversed spots, not related to the reversal of the poles.

Dr Svalgaard,
following Mt. Wilson mpsi I can see "cycles"? of about 25 days that seem not related to the rotation of the sun. What are they? How are called?

Thank you Dr. Did you write something specific on 'active longitudes'?

it means that the column contains the data smoothed over the last year, so the past six months cannot be computed yet.

Dr Svalgaard, It's been 10 months without a new high on the SS number and F10.7 flux. I think when that high occurred you reckoned in was the maximum for SC24? Do you currently think Dec 2011 was SC24 maximum?
The SC23 maximum was split into 2 peaks. I see it took 18 months for a new maximum to be reached. Does this split maxima correspond to any physical attribute of the sun?
Is another split peak likely for SC24?

The Northern Hemisphere has peaked, and the South will reach its own peak early next year.

Hi Leif I am doing some private studies on the Maunder minimum, and looking at the early cycles going into the minimum. I understand that there is some controversy about the numbers in years 1638-39, and that they perhaps should be lower? Making SC-10 a weaker cycle? Do you have a better dataset than this - i took them from ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/STP/SOLAR_DATA/SUNSPOT_NUMBERS/GROUP_SUNSPOT_NUMBERS/hilsen Jan

Thank you Dr. Svalgarad and thanks also to Sigurdur for sharing this link to the real expert work!
