1929-30 1946-47, 1962-63, 1978-79, 1995-96, 2012-13. All cold winters UK, some you'll appreciate were exceptional. 16 years in between.... Pointed out elsewhere, significant?? Looking further back, here is some light reading for your spare time: Monthly Weather Reports 1910s

There was a long and hot drought in Aussie in the 1890's through early 1900's. Ratty, can you expound on that era? Sig, certainly not from memory !!!! It was known as The Federation ** Drought, 1895–1902. There are reports of very hot weather in the 1800s too. The BoM plots below from Cape Otway and Coonabarabran may be an indication; unfortunately, finding stations with looooong continuous records is difficult here ... our climate records are in an appalling state: I might add that the early 1890s were WET !! Quote from an Aussie poem: " ... a land of droughts and flooding rains". PS: The Millennium Drought, from 2001 to 2009, is widely recognised as our worst since white settlement. ** Six separate British self-governing colonies of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia agreed to unite and form the Commonwealth of Australia

www.rationaloptimist.com/blog/explaining-ice-ages/Orbital wobbles, carbon dioxide and dust all seem to contribute An expanded version of my recent Times column on ice ages: Record cold in America has brought temperatures as low as minus 44C in North Dakota, frozen sharks in Massachusetts and iguanas falling from trees in Florida. Al Gore blames global warming, citing one scientist to the effect that this is “exactly what we should expect from the climate crisis”. Others beg to differ: Kevin Trenberth, of America’s National Centre for Atmospheric Research, insists that “winter storms are a manifestation of winter, not climate change”.

Yep, who in the world would ever equate Northern Hemisphere winter with cold? And storms? My goodness, Dr. Mann is justttttt so surprised! After all, he knows how to play hockey, (hockey stick)....he is a "Climate Scientist".....so he thinks. Gosh.......just gosh.....LOL.

Early in the morning on TCM they have a short movie called Weather Wizards. I suspect terms like "unprecedented and never before" are not really unprecedented and have happened before. In any case those of us that like the history of weather may find something interesting in this. Record it and discuss… Turner Classic Movies at 2:50 AM EST
I can't seem to find this short film on youtube or anywhere else but a brief synopsis on IMDB. Apparently an arctic front threatens citrus groves in Southern California in 1939. Long before we warmed those groves with CO2.
Anyhow I'm going to set my alarm, cook popcorn, open a rare bottle of Bourbon and enjoy the moving picture feature...
3:50 AM WEATHER WIZARDS ( 1939) This short film focuses on how scientists predict changing weather to assist in giving several days' warning to farmers. Dir: Fred Zinnemann Cast: Bert Moorhouse , Will Stanton , Robert Winkler . BW- 9 mins,
