Its pretty bad. One of the major reasons I was a liberal in my youth was the conservatives telling us that Rock and Roll was the music of Satan. The other day I read a ridiculous article in the Los Angeles Times claiming that football led to the US being a warlike nation because football was like war. The PC movement has caused the liberals to become exactly what they hated 50 to 60 years ago. Hopefully it works like ocean oscillations and we are just reaching a peak in this nonsense before the "wave" relaxes back to normal. Crikey Icefisher ..... if you go back that far, I'm surprised you can still see to type.

Ratty: There are a few "seasoned folks" who can still type. We do it via touch. The letters on my keyboard are mostly wore off so I couldn't do a look to see what letter it is anyways....

I can't believe anyone would be silly enough to write such an article at this point in time.
Apparently, models trump observation every time.
Occam should be turning in his grave.

I think that is extremely and increasingly important that someone, with appropiate skills and knowledge, gets to the task of incorporate this old IPCC graph: to the present ones that show the extent since 1979.

Can both be right? My theory has the Pacific linked to the Arctic with ice as a major player in observed multi-decadal oceanic oscillation. I of course have no clue as to the cause of the ice changes or if the ice changes are merely a cosymptom of an external forcing and tend at this point to leave that answer to Astromet. Since there are several observed effects, and very complicated physics and potentially a myriad of echos of past disturbances (not unlike water sloshing in a container for a significant time after being disturbed). . . .global climate science is apt to look like the history of the science of psychology for several hundred years. . . .and ultimately it is likely to not be understood long before the powers that be begin to administer cures. If anything around here is "well understood" its that.

It would be interesting to know what the base line value is for that graph. How many 10 6 million square kilometers? A quick look on P. 224 doesn't appear to indicate.

Ratty, Hrizzo, is this chart for global sea ice?

duwayne The original image was this: and it comes from from page 224 of IPCC FAR WG1 Nevertheless, I searched and found a graph at wattsupwiththat.com/2012/03/18/sea-ice-news-volume-3-2/The original is too big to publish here (I don´t know how to downsize images in the phorum), but I translated the legends into Spanish and saved it like this:

The original is too big to publish here (I don´t know how to downsize images in the phorum), but I translated the legends into Spanish and saved it like this: add parameters width="XXX" height="XX" after the img tag, see your editor for what I did to the image above. I also removed the max width= parameter but that may not be necessary.

Can you be sure that the zero line relates to a common base area in square kilometers??

Thank you, icefisher. Ratty, I refered to the WUWT article for that reason. As far as I can see, It doesn´t explain it. Nevertheless, I have found another very interesting article (in Spanish) with a superb graphic on the theme. I am trying to delve into its making, but if anyone wants to take a look at it, here you have the link: diablobanquisa.wordpress.com/2013/10/25/y-que-dicen-los-satelites-esmr-1972-1978/
