I should remember I was around then It's always sobering to look at images of vehicles that were contemporary to one's youth.

"Snow Falls Weeks Early In Munich! …Meteorologist: “Winter Strikes Unusually Early And Severely”! Meteorologists warned us that snow was on the way and would fall below the 500 m elevation in southern Germany and elsewhere. Moreover, they warned us that this winter could be one of the worst in 100 years for Central Europe......
...... Global warming alarmists claim that such incidences have nothing to do with a climate trend. Yet, climate warmists are now scrambling to explain the increasing frequency of cold weather events now taking hold globally. Whether it’s a killer winter in South America, increased snow cover globally, record Arctic sea ice recovery, recovering glaciers in the Alps, record high sea ice extent in Antarctica, extreme cold in southeast Europe, or 5 consecutive colder than normal European winters, just to name a few, the ominous signs of global cooling are compounding rapidly."NoTricksZoneSomeone else saying it will be a bad Northern Hemisphere winter.

Well, it was growing two weeks ago but I don't know about now. That graph is not exactly up to date

There seems to be a few forecasts around predicting a bitterly cold European winter.
As one scientist said, forecasting is difficult especially when it is about the future.
More seriously, the North Atlantic SST is relatively warm at the moment. The other major precondition for very cold European weather is depression tracks well South of normal. The forecasts are not suggesting this.
I think the publicity hounds are getting in their bids early. If they are wrong, nobody cares. If not, they can crow [and market] from the rooftops.
I am reasonably certain that chaotic weather systems are simply unpredictable on a one to three month view, and perhaps longer.

Bound to be in for a harsh one now... The Met have dismissed reports that we're set for the “worst winter in decades” - time to start preparing?

The Pacific Northwest is going into an Omega Block Curve for the week. cliffmass.blogspot.com/We are expecting warmish and sunny weather for the week, not what I was hoping for. I want a cold winter with moisture. We need the rain for hydro, fish, irrigation and we need the cold for snow to kill off those pesky insects migrating in from other places. Don't think you'll get colder - for you colder will be a bit of spectator sport - see Joe Bastardi's forecast on Weatherbell.com

A message from Joe Bastardi: "06z run of GFS ensembles has most widespread cold over the US I can remember in the last 10 days of October. Its so cold, I cant believe it"
We shall see if it is correct. Temperatures have certainly dropped here - it plunged to the 60's overnight!

I can see this winter as being continued yin and yang. Brutally cold in the troughs and unseasonably mild in the ridges. Storminess in-between. Brought to you by a loopy longitudinal jet stream that seems to be more in vogue of late. It will be interesting to see if a colder arctic summer with more ice translates into a colder NH winter.
