sigurdur,
How far does this weather set you back? How rare is freezing weather in late April?

Freezing temps are not that rare but normally short lived. This cold pattern has been persistent. Will have to check where the Rosby waves are.
The moisture is also excessive, bit we are in our wet cycle.
The clock continues to click.

Still watching for spring in my area. One of the hints that an El Nino may occur, is that before one actually manifests itself, the upper Mid-West of the USA is cool and wet.
But then we are blessed with an endless fall when the effects materialize.

Keep an eye on El Nino Forecasters also are watching El Nino, a complex weather pattern that results from variations in water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. El Nino can contribute to cooler, wetter weather in the Upper Midwest during the growing season. Conditions are trending rapidly toward El Nino, although it hasn’t been declared officially yet, Edwards says.Even if it continues to develop, El Nino’s impact on the Upper Midwest won’t be seen until mid or late summer, she says. - See more at: www.agweek.com/event/article/id/23213/#sthash.Zgeg2M7t.dpufwww.agweek.com/event/article/id/23213/

The Herring Gulls are (unusually) still resident in the fields around us; I'm guessing there's not much for them at the coast - due to the large pool of cold water to the west of the UK?

That pool of cold water has been present for some time, and is even more anomalous near the US coast. weather.unisys.com/surface/sst_anom_new.gifEurope better hope that the North Atlantic Drift re-establishes itself before next winter. Otherwise winter 2014/15 will be memorable.

I think that Europe will have a zinger winter for 2014/15.
And at the same time Europe is screwing up their natural gas supply.
This is not going to end well.

Spring is still a fantasy around here. Froze last night. While this isn't unheard off, the persistent cool is getting a tad on the old side.

Otherwise winter 2014/15 will be memorable. The Gulf Stream has "slowed" by 10 or 15 percent since 2004. Perhaps this slowing is a harbinger of change in the AMO. In addition it seems that multi year ice in the Arctic may be on the uptick as well. www.reading.ac.uk/news-and-events/releases/PR559097.aspx

Interesting find glenn. Does this help explain why the OHC of the Arctic Sea has been declining since 2003?

Interesting find glenn. Does this help explain why the OHC of the Arctic Sea has been declining since 2003? Sigurdur, The Gulf Stream slowing at the about the same time the OHC peaks and then starts declining seems like an awfully big coincidence. The more I read about this the more it is clear that there many more factors than just CO2 influencing our climate.
