All Good Things Must End It Seems (or just fade away)
Upon my family's return from the Middle East in 2002, I started an experiment. I would allocate US $100 every week for food and minor household items for a family of three ... and see how long I could maintain it. While it had been under ever greater pressure for some time, it is my sad duty to announce that today, November 10, 2017 my old friend passed away after a long illness (aged 15 1/2 years). He suffered a seizure on the meat aisle while trying to procure a week's ration on the remaining $5. Come to find out that he had been pilfering from other accounts for many months and was hopelessly in debt. He is survived by his offspring "the New Budget" of $125 ... although he is already looking a little peaked. The 40-lb squirrels had better look out! Elmer may take to the woods.

Even one that cost ya $100.00 per week. It used to be easy in the early days in Flagstaff. More recently it has required serious attention to sales and bulk buying with proper storage techniques. My dear spouse has always been "heavy" on the fruit and vegetables and "lighter" on the grains and meat. Tough on a true carnivore. Half cows used to stabilize the beef prices ... but 'rail-weight' prices are heading for $3 per pound, at which point the processed price will end up close to $6 ... and that's with probably 30% + hamburger. Grass-fed, grain-finished cows from local farmers. My turkey index has taken a serious spike ... maybe $0.30/lb Thanksgiving prices in the early days ... now $0.99/lb ... missed the one Kroger special of $0.69/lb last week. Veggies and fruit have taken a serious upward spike in the last few months. But of course we knew that was coming. We will make out OK ... but pray for the lower middle class. They are getting T-boned. Too rich and too proud for food stamps ... to poor for hope. The politicians should remember that they too are susceptible to GSD (Geomagnetic Stress Disorder).

We are down to 2. Weekly grocery bill around $45.00. We do buy bulk meat which isn't in that $45.00. Make our own steaks etc. Last beef was $2.28lb for.sirloon tips. Pork loin was $1.72
Target always has unadvertised hams at approximately $1.20lb. Limit is 10 hams.

Hams are still consistently on sale at Aldi's for $0.97/lb. How are the cousins making out price wise? I'll bet we're still lower.

Low on burger meat. Going through Moorhead, picked up a case of Sirloin. Up to $2.77/lb. Super good sale on Shrimp!! 6.62/lb for wild gulf shrimp. Not the cookie shrimp. Nice large tails!
Note to self. When south next winter, eat lots of cheap shrimp!

There's plenty of room. Celts preferred, but Angles and Saxons will do. We're a reasonably gregarious lot. Most of us are only 10 generations removed from the Queen's domains. Sorry Flea, no ocean here ... but there are boat loads of Asian carp in the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers just awaiting harvest. Bring your helmet for combat fishing. They are jumpers.
