Here is a site that summarizes the cost of a standard package of goods and services based on user-provided (expat) data. Not being an economist, I've often wondered why it is that OZ and New Zealand are so pricey on a comparative basis. The last time I visited (~2000) it didn't feel so bad because the AUD was trading at 2 to the USD. So why is the COL in OZ as high as Hawaii? Don't you make anything anymore? After all, China is just next door. www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/index We went looking for canned beetroot yesterday. Had to buy "Product of the USA" ..... That is truely sad for a branch of the descendants of the sons of the industrial revolution. On a visit in 2001 I had a conversation with a gentleman who told me that the Australian government in it's infinite wisdom had a policy discouraging the development of manufacturing, which he thought was insane. I had to agree. I don't know about OZ, but those displaced by the loss of manufacturing in the US have, on average, seen their incomes shrink as new sectors have not absorbed the displaced at comparable salaries. Automation will continue this process, but if automation is to rule, then let that automation be implemented here. Let the machines be built here. Let the people that run them live here. That is why Trump was elected. A country that doesn't make anything anymore is headed for the scrap pile of history. A modern society cannot thrive just on software programmers and burger flippers. There the Germans had it right.

For the life of me, I can't understand why having manufacturing in the USA is considered bad by the liberals.
Their mindset is so screwed up anymore. Engaging a few today left me in awe. Rattys picture in another thread about the stupid challenge seems to be spot on anymore. When one thinks they can't get more stupid, they rise to the challenge and prove me wrong.

I too am not an economist but I have a sneaking suspicion that the multitude of free trade agreements various Aussie governments couldn't sign quickly enough have something to do with the demise of manufacturing. Trade agreements ensure that we must play on the level field. Only problem is, the field isn't level. Our army dress uniforms are made in China! No Aussie clothing shop could compete with China. New Army dress uniforms being made in China to achieve 'best value for money'That's just one example of our stupidity. Our automotive manufacturing industry will stop making vehicles by the end of 2018. Ford is already gone. Sigh.

I've been out of the field for far too long to offer any assistance but I am certain - had I been there - this would never have happened. Unfortunately, these things can occur even with the best planning and the best available brains on the job. I see the PIR should be finished in March. Perhaps the cause should have been obvious after the second failure ....... but, I have some sympathy for the investigators. Hardware fault? Software fault? Combination that needed specific circumstances that could not have been anticipated? Logs will be pored over ....

Trump's despicable predecessor left this refugee timebomb for the new President .... Australia is collateral damage. Turnbull is finished anyway and we are in for a bumpy ride with the "far right" gaining ground. I think I might be one of them. China beckons?
