Tripod goes up today Ice thickness looks odd (click on ice at www.nenanaakiceclassic.com/)Jan 16 - 16 Inches Feb 7 - 16 Inches Feb 26 - 23.5 Inches This compares with 34 Inches on Feb.25th. in 2018 and 31.5 inches in February 2017. Both breakout dates were 1st.May I was expecting thick ice for 2019 Cold weather in North America reported as severe at the moment! Great Lakes Ice reported as increasing ice! North West Passage failed to open this year! This looks as though Nenanah Ice going against the trend Can anyone explain?

The position of the Greenland high is further east than normal. This directs the coldest air through central Canada to the continental USA. Alaska then gets to bath in the balmy temperatures. I am currently trying to figure out when that sucker is going to slide west. IF it doesn't, well.........going to be a later than desired planting season for a LOT of farmers.

It never goes away. It is a semi-permanebt fixture of the NH weather pattern.

It never goes away. It is a semi-permanebt fixture of the NH weather pattern. Just seemed to be alot of low pressure in that area this winter....

Yes, the high is further east and north. Makes for warm Europe and cold eastern 2/3 US.

Brrrrr! Lake Superior Reaches 90 Percent Ice Cover This Winter marks fifth time in 2 decades Lake Superior has nearly frozen solid It was these stories that made me think breakout would be well into May
But the thin ice points to an early breakout.
Jan 16 - 16 Inches Feb 7 - 16 Inches Feb 26 - 23.5 Inches Mar 4 - 32.5 Inched
My guess coming in soon after next ice thickness report

Relatively less ice in Alaska is consistant with historical colder periods i think....

[ Snip ] Something about alaska and NH cold, it wasnt covered by glacial ice sheet as Canada/US/Europe/parts of Siberia in the last iceage? Relatively less ice in Alaska is consistant with historical colder periods i think.... Probably because it's too cold in Alaska for the ice to form .......
