Meanwhile, crops in UK are exhibiting drought stress. We've not had average rainfall for 15 months. Rapeseed is getting eaten by pesticide resistant bugs. Over here we call them Democrats.

Flying north from St Louis to MSP ... dark bare ground all the way. No greenish tinge to be seen on cultivated fields ☹️

Flying north from St Louis to MSP ... dark bare ground all the way. No greenish tinge to be seen on cultivated fields ☹️ It isn't very good. Wheat is a cool season grass. Stands are not very good. When wheat has been seeded for 5 weeks and it isn't up, it probably isn't going to come up. No corn rows, no potato rows. I am planting spuds now. Earlier spuds should be rowed by now. Seed rot is a somewhat minor problem as the ground was cold when planting. Today, we had a short heatwave. Got to 90. Will be cooling off again in the next couple of days.

Headline on web today is that if it rains any more the corn crop is toast. Last planting window is closing.

Not by cold alone do famines occur. Cousin wetness plays a role.

Somebody (perhaps Glenn) should add periodic grain market charts to this thread. The Chinese (and others) may be paying hefty prices come fall unless they have locked in some prices.

Brazilian soy output will fill any shortfall in production. Another factor is Avian Swine Flu. To date, China has exterminated approximately 1/3 of their hog herd.
The 🌽 situation could become more interesting. With that stated, South America has also increased production.
Wheat could be the sleeper. Too much moisture on heading and headed grain begets fusarium. Think Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas. Then we have the Canadian prairie. Very dry.
