I have seen alot of news storys out of Kentucky about the Ice Storm and things look very bad.
I think when it comes to Winter weather, the US government fails to realize what damage it can cause.

The worst of the storm was in the western half of Kentucky, where there are still large areas without power. We had about 3/8 inch of ice here in Lexington, so it wasn't quite as bad, and the power outages were limited to a few neighborhoods in town. Western Kentucky is predominantly rural with many narrow roadways in a rolling landscape, so the problem is getting to the farm areas where the roadways haven't been cleared yet. Many of the deaths attributable to the storm were caused by unsafe heating devices, either through fires or CO poisoning.
Fortunately, the temperature rose above freezing last night and much of the ice has melted off, but that can still cause problems when the tree branches that were weighted down by the ice start to spring back up, so it isn't entirely over yet.

Hey everyone....
Bush and FEMA got slammed because they did EXACTLY WHAT THE PLAN WAS TO DO.
FEMA ALWAYS planned to get on site within 72 hours of a disaster happening. EVEN WITH having to clear the last 100 miles of roads, FEMA was on site in 71 hours.
The first three days have ALWAYS been local responsibility. THe local government of N'awlins fell down on the job and everyone responsible for their emergency management plan should be punished in an appropriate manner.
As far as the ice storm goes, I don't remember when it first hit, but don't start getting pissed off about FEMA not showing up until 3 days has past.
