On the first Earth Day, when I was in school, we were assured that the oil supply would run out in 25 to 30 years (10 to 15 years ago).

I have no idea what earth day is, sounds like something from Startrek but I suppose the fear of running out of oil made a significant impression. People still talk about that sort of stuff. My sense is this makes a good argument for buying some XOM (Exxon Mobil ) stock. Let more focused minds worry about little details like that.

I have no idea what earth day is, Odds are the companies who sell the products you buy have heard of it. Most have special displays up right now for Earth Day. Take Clorox for example. They have their new Green Works products on special display. Method and Seventh Generation also have special displays up.

It seems obvious all the cheap oil is in fact gone. Without EOR and improved drilling technologies we would certainly be having shortages right about now. It will be interesting to see what the next 20 years brings.

Oil production was always going to follow a bell curve and we're right on schedule. No, it's not going to "run out" in 15 years--it's going to be about where it should be on the bell curve (google "Hubbert Peak Theory"). I suppose that you could say that accessibility is going to "run out" for an ever-increasing amount of people. Of course, we're not really going to have an "ever-increasing amount of people" because you're really going to start seeing a bit of a die-off within a few years. Mathematically, we're right where we should be, it just feels like it's all unfolding in slow motion.

The first one in 1970 commemorated the 100th anniversary of Lenin's birth. It would be unfair to say it celebrates communism. If you wanted to celebrate that you would use Karl Marx' birthdate. Lenin though created a system of controlling people using committees, commissars (today's term Czar), five-year plans, control of science (to ensure it only produces committee friendly stuff) etc.

My wife who is so much better informed about these sort of socialists stuff said that earth day is some sort of annual garbage pick up celebration done in Calif especially along the beaches. I think this is a great idea except I think one should be more conscious about this in the beginning and not throw litter around in the first place. Failing that, I think people should make a daily practice to clean up litter when and where they see it and not just one day a year. I am against litter and for big oil. I am guessing that oil will surprise even the most dispairing in its persistence into the future. I expect to be driving my suv for another 10 or 20 years, limited only by my aging.
