"What really strikes me is that we still have so few Australians taking specific actions like substantially reducing their household energy use, driving and flying less, switching to green power, or even buying carbon offsets, especially given all of the media coverage on this critical issue," she added.
Well there is a surprise. Its one thing holding a strong view when hypothesizing or having a political argument: its altogether different when its your wallet or comfort that is involved. As for 'buying carbon offsets' - how can that justify anything? Either the CO2 is bad for the world or its not.
Perhaps people should live by what they say a little more - if someone protests against air travel - their name is added to the no-fly list. If they don't want nuclear and coal power then their electricity is reduced to the percentage available from other means - by only allowing so many hours of access a day. This approach would at least add a little reality (and credibility) to their arguments.

Now you know why Gore & his toadies (sorry - addicted to puns) are so worried - they need all our money for insulation against the cold so they don't go dormant!

Scientists Predict Carbon Dioxide Emissions Will Reduce Density of Earth's Outermost Atmosphere by 2017 The effect is furthered by the Solar minimum. www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=108187&org=NSF&from=newsWith more CO2 in the thermosphere, this is excited by collisions with atomic oxygen, emits IR radiation - effectively sucking energy out of the thermosphere which then shinks- as cooler (slower) molecules take up less volume. Less drag on satellites - will save the space agencies millions!

Scientists Predict Carbon Dioxide Emissions Will Reduce Density of Earth's Outermost Atmosphere by 2017 Wouldn't a more dense atmosphere at lower levels mean that it would be warmer? Either way, this might be the newest argument to burning fossil fuels: "Hey it may not cause global warming, but we must protect our upper atmosphere!" It is an endangered spacies!

Here's more gloom courtesy of the Sydney Morning Herald: "October 27, 2008 - 3:11PM Sea levels will rise by one metre this century, according to German scientists who warn that global warming is happening faster than previously predicted. Citing UN date on climate change, two senior German scientists say that previous predictions were far too cautious and optimistic." This time it's soot from Chinese coal-fired power plants increasing Greenland ice cap melt with a resulting rise in sea level. news.smh.com.au/world/sea-levels-to-rise-by-one-metre-experts-20081027-59ki.html#

Science Daily has a surprising story posted: "ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2008) — After more than 20 years of research in the northern hardwood forests of Michigan, scientists at Michigan Technological University's School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science have reached a surprising conclusion: Moderate increases in temperature and nitrogen from atmospheric pollution actually improve forest productivity." My goodness, global warming and even acid rain may have positive aspects!? Cool stuff! This bit may especially interest the paranoid: "The research, which started out as an acid rain study in 1987, has grown into one of the longest continuous research studies supported by the National Science Foundation. A new five-year grant of $151,628 will fund the research through 2012." Obviously they know the world is ending in 2012 and so the funding stops there. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/10/081021214850.htm
