[ Snip ] I see an upward trend in both arctic and Antarctic happening, all that hot air that made it's way north over the winter has cooled leaving us a net loss in heat, what heat will be left to head north next winter?? Only Green & political. PS: Should I stop using a capital"G" for the Greens now?

Personally, I would find ANY gratification at "20 below" difficult to achieve.
Sigurdur, I assume that as a North American you were using the degF scale!!

But -20F and -20C aren't much different. Slightly brisk. As I have said here sometime ago I was flying into Deer Lake from Goose Bay, Labrador. Goose Bay had been a steady minus 37C for a week. As the aircraft descended on approach, the pilot announced: "We have started our descent into Deer Lake, the weather there is mainly sunny with scattered snow showers a light North West wind and it is a pleasantly warm minus 10C.". When we arrived the push crews and luggage handlers were in shirts with sleeves rolled up.

nsidc.org/soac/sea-ice-age-year.html#seaiceagesequentialJust have a peep at the 1985 data compared to the latest ( 2014) plot. Where is the 5 year+ ice now? Well 2010 took the last of the paleocryistic ice in the record volume drop that year but we are now seeing winters exporting our older ice so we come out of winter with less old ice than what we went into winter with!
