A return to those events would be a huge challenge.
Think of this past winter and railroads. It used to be common for the railroad to have a fleet of snowblowers for deep snow. They haven't been upgraded and maintained as snow is supposed to have been much less. East West tracks were closed this past winter because of the inability of BNSF to remove snow.

Cool. The engineers of tomorrow ... today. Wonder where I could get a blueprint of their gadget. Would be interesting to try it out.

I haven't had time to look at veg maps etc to see what the condition of the 2017 crop is, as a whole.
The great white combine came on the night of the 9th, and I will be reseeding lots of beans. Took whole quarters of crops in a large area. (Large, as in near and on top of me). Overall, small area as some area is always hammered. This year.............oh well. There will be no top end yields this year.

Have you any ideas yet if its worth accounting for perhaps similar weather next year? Is there any way to mitigate the losses?

Planting with a shorter season variety which means less yield. Better less than zero. As far as next year's weather, I haven't a clue. I know this fall will be warm because a La Nina will develop or at least should.

Well, i hope the weather gods look on you favourably!!
I dont think the farmers in the Uk have suffered due to weather this year. It was very dry earlier, but we've had plenty of rain/sunshine mix and the fields next to my home seems to be doing as well as my garden.

I hate to sound stupid, because I am, but have you ever thought of something more cold hardy? You could always plant Digitalis en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitalis My wife had me bring some home from the mountains and the darn things grow everywhere! I can't get rid of them! Turns out the things are a very strong poison..... Hmmm Vladimir might be wanting a crop. But I think he has stronger stuff. Later, after some thought: You sure those aren't just Democrats? Same MO ... grow everywhere ... can't get rid of them ... very poisonous. Yep, them's Democrats.
