Houston is currently 20 F. (-6.6 C) Making it the coldest day since 1989. Hundreds of accidents all over the city due to ice buildup on overpasses and thousands of homes with frozen and broken pipes. Considering the duration of the cold it is likely to be the coldest winter since 1983. Actually looking forward to the January Thaw forecast to begin in about 3 days. One more frigid night and the warmup begins. www.click2houston.com/news/hundreds-of-accidents-reported-as-houston-area-deals-with-icy-roads

Thank you Sig. It does indeed have the text files for max and min monthly, size=~4mb (and daily size=~400mb) temperature for their US Climate Divisions. Question is, given their history of (cough) data adjustment, do I believe them? If I can figure out their division codes, I will run comparisons of my known stations (like Columbia, MO) and compare the sets. It is encouraging that the US max temps below actually shows 1936(?) as being higher than anything except 2015(?). Min temps for the last 20(?) years largely exceed anything else. If these are real (original) data with all their pimples and warts, then they could be very useful. It's a darn shame that I don't believe this for a minute. But I'm willing to give them ONE LAST CHANCE.

Seems they might need some help. Fortunately for us, Central Missouri never changed its building codes ... still requires depths to withstand -20 F ... which we haven't seen for a while. I'm going to propose a special (Resistance to Stupidity) award for that / those people responsible.

19F in NOLA last night. That's the coldest I ever remember. 26F at noon, and unlikely to break freezing today. Four hours of sleet and freezing rain last night. Keep in mind we have a warm lake to our north and the GOM to the south. That's some pretty cold temperatures for a Caribbean city!

I have a feeling I'd not get much work done tho, I wouldn't be happy until I'd bought a Stetson, aquired a big pickup and driven for hours down a dusty track to a far way service station where a dungarees wearing hillbilly looks at me suspiciously, then a black '70s Lincoln pulls up and a cowboy boot with spurs appears below the opening door......oh hang on, I'm day dreaming!! You may laugh but going (coming) to America would like visiting a movie set for me, we watch so much American stuff over here, I'd wouldn't be able to do anything for at least a month other then immerse myself in all the stereotypes just for indulgence sake. Coming back to earth would be a slow cautious affair.
