Ah. Time to locate my water meter key in the shed then. Amazing how dramatically a PVC pipe can shatter in a freeze. Indeed. And at times like these we here in Columbia MO are seriously glad that our city officials have never "caved" to any demands to lighten the burial-depth requirements in code for water lines. Given global warming and all. Three feet is required ... and is based on historical precedent. Let us hope that conditions precedent are not dethroned by conditions subsequent. 7' in these parts of the land. Even at 7', there have been known to be "water" issues.

It's 4' in the Catskills where my cabin is but only 2' on Long Island IIRC. I was curious what it was by you Sig. 7' is serious.

In mid-Missouri, the frost line at Columbia has also never reached the 20-inch depth. The coldest temperature at 20 inches was 35° in 1996, and the coldest 40-inch temperature was 42° in 1978. The coldest 8-inch temperature was 28° in 1982 and 1996.
It is apparent that such measurements were likely not taken, or at least not recorded, in the 1880-1900 period. May the warmth be with us.

Feel free to "pinch" as appropriate or willfully pleasing.

Nokomis, Florida. December 22 at 27 N Latitude. Evening temperature in 40s F. Puffa jackets everywhere. Nokomis tribe drum band at beach pounding up a storm, but for all their efforts, no effect on the weather. Elder medicine man's license to practice revoked. But the boys have energy.

The headline said: Australian heatwave sees capital cities and regional towns swelter Perth is a mild 25°C, about five degrees below average. Darwin is 31.6°C, slightly below average. Brisbane (28.6°C) and Hobart (20°C) are both about average. Sydney is a little warmer than average but 14°C below its December record. Australia and India are playing a cricket test match in Melbourne where it is 37°C, well above average but well short of a record (43.7°C in 1876). Adelaide is 40°C, well short of a December record (44.2°C in 1904). A lot of regional towns will be above average.
