I read an article that was lauding a member of the IPCC as being a Nobel (Peace Prize) Laureate. Although Al Gore was singled out in 2007, the other half of the prize went to the IPCC. My understanding was that the organization was awarded the prize and the (alleged) glory, but not any particular member. Does the janitor qualify? (not to belittle the janitor, whose work is arguably as important than that of the technical staff).

Al Gore and the IPCC are the laureates, not any member. By the way, after they were named, Swedish authorities announced that they were going to examine whether the Norwegian committee is respecting the will of Alfred Nobel. www.nrk.no/nyheter/nobels_fredspris/1.6345492 (in Norwegian)

You could argue the case that at the IPCC, the scientists and the janitors are doing essentially the same thing.

Pachauri is described as a Nobel laureate in news stories: www.newsobserver.com/news/story/935993.htmlsearch.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20080622a3.htmlHis own website confirms that his carbon footprint is not terribly small The name of Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri, Director General of TERI and Chairman of the IPCC has become synonymous with climate change and the environment. Internationally recognised as a leading global thinker and leader of research, the more so since sharing the podium with Al Gore to receive the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the IPCC, he has effortlessly worn these two hats. Now, however, he finds himself catapulted into a third unnamed role as international statesman promoting climate change awareness. As the world wakes up to the reality of imminent climate change, environmental issues have suddenly taken on an extra urgency and Dr Pachauri's work schedule has expanded enormously. These days he is constantly on the move, criss-crossing the globe to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counter such change. Now, seriously, if you believed that carbon dioxide was threatening humanity's very existence, would you be "criss-crossing the globe" -- constantly?
