Science Magazine 3 April 2009 VOL 324 has rehabilitated Medieval Warming. The study is or rather its publication is about revolutionary, because "Science" has been one of the most firm AGW supporter.
Article by Valerie Trouet et. al. is entitled "Persistent Positive North Atlantic Oscillation Mode Dominated the Medieval Climate Anomaly."
By the way, I think to call the Medieval Climate as an anomaly is curious. The climate on Earth is at a constant change. But this of course gives them right to call the Global Warming an anomaly, because then they can claim it is not natural.
Their abstract ends: "Globally distributed proxy data suggest that [this] NAO shift is one aspect of a global MCA-LIA climate transition that probably was coupled to prevailing La Niña-like conditions amplified by an intensified Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during the MCA."
Although they say, or just because they say: "...its driving mechanisms remain uncertain.", leaves all a great arena to debate.

Isn't it just a ruse to dismiss the MWP as a local, rather than global phenomenon? If you can't "get rid" of it, minimise it.

I also remember when tree ring proxies were pretty much just used to tell how much rain there was...recently they used a secondary correlation (wetter=warmer) correlation, but then turned around and told us if the earth warmed we'd all be killed by horrible droughts. Be nice if they could get their stories straight

With the Medieval Climate Optimum springboarding mankind into modern civilization and following that example we should all go home and encourage our families and friends to participate in a great worldwide project . Climate Optimization II CO2 for short. ;D

I always thought that today's climate and the MWP would be fairly similar...although it's hard to say how exactly. Would most people say that it is slightly cooler than back in the good old days of castles and chainmail? (I always liked this graph best...)

That little 350 year blip of a warm cycle might have been enough for some ice free summers in the arctic but not enough to make new beaches. Summer arctic ice may be the exception in this inter-glacial.
