If there is a bias in the land surface temperature data (such as GISS), that would tend to make it appear as though the delta(T) / decade is much higher than reality. However, does that also mean that, when the bias no longer increases, that the apparent leveling out (or, at least, slower increase) would tend to make the model predictions look more suspect than they might, otherwise?

The model predictions could not look more suspect than they do. ;D

Only if the bias affected the trend, i.e. there would need to be a trend in the bias.

The Rob Peter to Pay Paul schemes always fall apart simply because you can't keep trending in the opposite direction of the true direction. But that doesn't stop them from trying and running the game for several years.

Do they even have "petards"?

Chuckle. "Hoist" is to be hanged or to be blown into the air.
A "petard" is a small bomb, intended to be hung on the outside of fortress doors in order to force entry.
To be "hoist by one's petard" is to be blown up by one's own bomb - or to otherwise be destroyed by one's own actions or devices.
Several prominent AGW's come to mind in that context.
