The scientists I know fall into four camps, depending on employment.
Those whose income comes form working outside academia think the whole AGW debate is silly.
Those whose continued employment depends on keeping their mouth shut generally keep their lip zipped.
Most of those whose jobs depend on supporting AGW try to stick their heads up as little as possible.
And those who hope to profit from the AGW bubble before it bursts are vocal in their support.

In addition most scientists are relatively poor so their options are limited to going for the gold or shut up.

Stranger I know two scientists personally, one who works for NASA and the other at Sandia National Labs, who have changed their minds about AGW and who now believe that a natural cooling cycle is underway as a follow-up to a natural warming period. Both of them are reluctant to voice their opinions at work due to the professional ostracism they will face. These two very intelligent people opened my eyes to a lot issues beyond the very basic understanding I had acquired that CO2 has historically followed temperatures. Any way, neither will dare to jeopardize their careers since they have nice retirements awaiting them. Plus, they both have very nice salaries. I guess George Soros is not willing to fund their legal woes should they face employment discrimination for their scientific views.

Yes, the biggest difference between the global cooling scare of the 60s and 70s and the global warming scare we're currently in...is the incredible politicization, especially by the green groups. Their cash cow (global warming) gives them billions to spew their BS and even if its shaky science they assume non harm is done in "helping" mother earth.
The politicization generates big bucks. The politicization leads to massive ad campaigns. The politicization causes people to be censored and censured if they do not pull the party line.
This is the greatest failure of science in the history of the world...brought about through political and social tampering. It surpasses even the bungling of Galileo's findings by the church in its scope and systematic application.
I hope that one day all these well-meaning people will realize that pretty much everything they thought wrong with skeptics...actually applied to them.

The difference is some clever profiteers learned out how to make a few billion dollars off the fear mongering. And they have sold the idea that we can manage the climate by way of tax increases.
