Lake Superior has a zone of ice all around it, now.

Once the shoreline has completed the ring of ice, normally the lake freezes quit rapidly. Being there is another 2 months of quit cold weather normally in that area, it looks like it may freeze over this year.

Interestingly, Lake Superior (upper left) seems somewhat below normal, but the others have a negative anomaly. It should be an interesting week, as cold temperatures are predicted for these areas.

It has been down right cold around here this last week and near term forecast is for more of the same. Yes it will be interesting to see how the ice develops.
It's noteable that the lakes reached 10% coverage ~12/31/09 (Interpolated from 12/25/09 - 1/1/10 data) this is the 5th earliest time to reach the 10% level in the last 20 years. It is also the second year in a row that 10% was reached before Jan. You have to go back to '84-'85 to find the last time that happened in consecutive years.

From Kiwi's chart in reply 6 it looks like there's been a big thaw on the lakes, here's what they looked like on the 7th for comparison: tinypic.com/r/28cqbdx/6

I don't know about a thaw. It may be that shore ice can break off due to wind and drift into the warmer open waters. I live near the west shore of Lake Michigan and it hasn't approcahed freezing since mid-December. The forecast shows we may get there next week, though.

This is behind last year, I believe. Unless there's another cold snap or two, I'm guessing that Superior won't freeze over this year.

Not a lot of change; it's supposed to have been cold this week (Magellan?), so maybe we'll get more ice.

I live in Ottawa, Canada, and it is not really cold at all. You may notice the Gulf of St. Lawrence is almost ice free as well. There is no sign of any, what we call, cold weather in our forecast for the next week at least.
