When was the last year all the Great Lakes froze completely? When I lived in Michigan 80-81 I recall they completely froze for a short period.

Don't know. It is rare to have Lake Michigan freeze over.

Here's another nice source/graphic of the GL surface water temps, this is for Lake Superior You can get the plots for the other lakes and graphs back to 1994 at this site. coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/statistic/statistic.htmlCan't remember but you may have to login/register at the site as "anonymous" and supply an email address to access the data.

"At the end of February open water will prevail in the east central section with a narrow open water area extending into the western section of the lake."
