Thanks mkelter, that is certainly an explanation and you are more knowledgeable than me! I'll look into that some more now you've given some background and a direction. I still rate as a beginner where this science is concerned. I must say, I was rather hoping some of the longer standing members would help with this as well as taking constant technical points against each other!! I was looking for some relationship between the ice area fluctuations shown in www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/en/home/seaice_extent.htm and the temperature fluctuations, but that is probably far too simple.

Would someone mind answering my question above? I'm trying to learn something...
"A simple question, which hopefully one of the more knowledgeable members can answer.
The DMI Daily Mean Temperatures graph, reproduced by Cuttydyer above and here ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/meant80n.uk.php shows a pretty regular fluctuation of temperature in terms of time rather than magnitude. It is particularly noticeable in the section of the graph above 273 Kelvin, perhaps because the fluctuations are less wild than elsewhere. I cannot work out the period of the oscillation (is it weekly?) and would like an explanation for the oscillation if someone can give one.
Thanks!"

Also, don't forget that the Sun MUST cool and eventually all the ice will come back. Unless, of course the Sun has nothing to do with climate....

"The North Sea flood of 1953 was one of the most devastating natural disasters ever recorded in the United Kingdom. Over 1,600 km of coastline was damaged, and sea walls were breached, inundating 1,000 km². Flooding forced 30,000 people to be evacuated from their homes, and 24,000 properties were seriously damaged." I know I've posted about this disaster before, which marks the year and into the month of my birth in Norfolk, one of the counties most affected. I suppose this was AGW as well?? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea_flood_of_1953

Mankind used to be afraid that the sun would not rise, that eclipses would eat the sun, and so on. What is the difference now? Mankind used to offer sacrifices and find scapegoats to appease the gods and forestall these miraculous events. What is the difference now?

From the Met Office Workshop Prof Stephen Belcher from the Met Office Hadley Centre, who lead the discussions said that changes in the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), as the ocean current is called, was one of the prime factors. Professor Stephen Belcher: "We need to know what's loading the dice for the position of the jet stream" "It's the pattern of warm and cold water, it's the contrast of the warm and the cold, when that sits in the right place beneath the jet stream, it can kind of steer the jet stream and influence where it goes," he said. "I'm excited about this work, it's a new thing that we didn't really know about." Really! You have only just realized the AMO could affect the UK climate! And if they "didn't really know about" any significant thing, how can they have been so certain about their advice to politicians....?
