I would appreciate comments from the experts on the link I posted above: www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/v1/n1/full/nclimate1065.htmlThe paper, although from March 2011, sets out in readable form a link between UV radiation, changes in polar stratospheric temperature, jet streams, and suggests a tension between ozone and "human-induced increase in greenhouse-gas concentrations". The introduction to the paper says: "Recovery of the ozone hole and increasing greenhouse-gas concentrations have opposite effects on the jet stream. New model experiments indicate that they will cancel each other out over coming decades, leaving storm tracks at a stand still." In other words, reductions in ozone will push jet streams in a "recovery" direction but greenhouse gases will undo that good work. It seems to be assumed that increase in greenhouse gases is human induced (I cannot see a clear reference). Help, please, someone!

Although it may be a simplistic view, the answer must be to a) retain and b) distribute excess precipitation from elsewhere in a country/continent. Libya had the right idea, despite Gaddafi's less desirable attributes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Manmade_RiverOf course, such projects need funding. I wonder what less deserving projects could have cash diverted from them?

The "end of the century" will be outside the lifetime of any parties to the present climate debates, so to that extent is an easy target for speculation. The question for the climate experts is, the degree to which the article is speculation. There are no details of the model relied upon and presumably this article cannot have been subjected to any form of review. The article is predicated upon "A catastrophic rise in sea level before the end of the century" . This idea has now hit the alarmist mainstream press here: www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2258398/Climate-change-Sea-level-rises-worse-feared-say-leading-scientists-tens-millions-likely-driven-homes.htmlPerhaps this is the establishment riposte to the statistical discrediting of AGW science recently.

Thankyou, I pretty much understand the thrust of the paper although I had to look several things up. I wonder what prominence this report will achieve in the press? I shall look out for it.

Interesting. With this kind of thing going on, how is a reasonable person of moderate intelligence and education but no specialist knowledge in the climate field (such as myself lol!) to draw conclusions? Are the public to accept without questions anything the government favourites tell us? I guess so. Something else that bothered me until I realised was that I had mentally associated "climate change" with "wholly man made". If someone inquisitive and rather non-conformist like me can be so taken in by the manmade global warming lobby, what hope is there?

Looks like the whole of the UK may become a flood plain! Especially East Anglia, the bit where I am, large chunks of which were reclaimed from the sea. A short article here: visitely.eastcambs.gov.uk/history/draining-fensand more general about the region here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_AngliaQuoting from the Wikipedia article shows the risk the region runs (particularly in the northern part). "Large sections of East Anglia (including parts of Lincolnshire) consisted of marshland and bogs until the 17th century, despite the construction of early sea barriers by the Roman Empire. During the 17th century the alluvial land was converted into arable land by means of systematic drainage using a collection of drains and river diversions."

Hello everyone.
I've been watching the boards for a couple of years and recently got a login (thanks Kevin!). The professionalism and huge knowledge of the key members is humbling and I am a mere tyro where climate is concerned. However, I want to make a small mark on the boards, so from a simple, tyro's viewpoint I am going to predict a sea ice minimum extent for 2013 based mostly on the pattern there seems to be for the last 6 years and a "feel" from various posts here.
My prediction for 2013 sea ice extent is 4.9
